let us know what you pick - would love to go this yr to Suffolk but have to see how finances are !

Lived in Suffolk and went to Norfolk, regularly. They are both stunning counties. Have you looked at Centre Parks? It was too close for us to ever use, but we had friends who swore by it.

Has no one mentioned Aldeburgh? Fab location, great restaurants, shops, ice-creams and brilliant fish and chips - as long as you are not a veggie.

Do you like bitter? Both Suffolk and Norfolk brew beautiful beers. Ceramics, deli and great seconds bookshop in Southwold. Brilliant second-hand book shop in Wells (I'd have to check that).

Personally, always liked Norwich - city girl, really. Then again, Bury St. Edmunds is a fab place. Actually, this is a win-win situation because you can stay in one and visit the other.

just about to buy somewhere near sherringham (norfolk) it is a great place for family holidays safe beaches lovely walks steam railway lots to do.

WendyWeber · 05/01/2008 23:12

There is a nice sort-of-complexy place just on the border which has lots of different accommodation plus swimming pool etc - will see if I can find it.

We went to the Broads 18 months ago, first time in Norfolk ever, loved it.

WendyWeber · 05/01/2008 23:13

Waveney River Centre - haven't been but it looks v nice

WendyWeber · 05/01/2008 23:19

Dunno what your budget is, harman, but they have caravans which are v reasonable (and then onwards and upwards from there of course)

My family have a holiday home in Kessingland (Suffolk). There's a fair bit to do, Africa Alive, Sutton Hoo, Fritton Park (ok, that is actually in Norfolk), Framlingham Castle, Somerleyton House, a Transport Musesum in Carlton Colville, Southwold as loads of people have mentioned, Lowestoft (nice beach there and they have an air show every July), Woodbridge, Beccles, Caister is just up the road with a castle there plus more seafront than you could shake a stick at. Plenty of dunes to wander around on near Kessingland as well.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2008 23:41

we did go once to the CenterParcs at Elveden Forest - but couldn't wait to escape to Walberswick - bit of a long drive to there though.
Agree about the beer - can recommend a trip to St Peter's Brewery nr Bungay - fantastic restaurant - lovely beers and there's the Adnam's Brewery in Southwold. I liked Aldeburgh too...that's where the Maggi Hambling sculpture for Benjamin Britten is. Also both Suffolk and Norfolk great for bird watching.

MaryAnnSingleton · 05/01/2008 23:42

Somerlyton is the nicest stately home I've ever been to !

bookwormmum · 05/01/2008 23:43

I like the pub for eating in Somerleyton . Not cheap though!

oliviaelanasmum · 05/01/2008 23:44

Norfolk is lovely (im biased i live here!!)

DaDaDa · 05/01/2008 23:45

North Norfolk coast (Brancaster to Sheringham stretch) is fantastic. Not sure about holiday complexes there though, we always rent a cottage.

bookwormmum · 05/01/2008 23:46

Loads of places to visit in Norfolk too .

Hunstanton is nice but it's flipping miles to get to from anywwhere.

sunflowervalley · 05/01/2008 23:47

HI Harman,I live in North Norfolk and it;s a fab place,of course I am biased

Fab beaches at Holkham as mentioned, but also some great national trust places if you are interested.
Holkham Hall
Blickling Hall---Aylsham-fab little market town
Felbrigg Hall -Gorgeous orangery and walks
Blakney Point-very Boden like and fab fresh fish and seal watching

Cromer for the crabs of course
Brancaster beach is stunning
Holme next the sea-another fab beach
Cley next the sea-Fab smokehouse for fish and gorgeous deli
Holt-stunning market town-very posh-quaint antique shops and a store called "Larners of Holt" which is a food lovers paradise.
Great to look round and find such things as gentlemans relish, pickled walnuts ,cavier,it's like a "Fortnum and Mason in Norfolk.

Sorry I could go on........

callmeovercautious · 05/01/2008 23:51

You would have to check out more recent visitors for current recommendations but there is a complex at Cromer COuntry Club with a heated pool and chalet type appartments. I never stayed but used the pool when I lived there years ago. I knew the people that owned it, not sure if they are still there.

Cromer is very touristy but has great facilities for little one and is near loads of other attractions. It has a Station too if you are going by train.

Google them and see!

norfolk is great.....
but suffolk is truly fab. spend LOTS of time there (as well as in n london, BEETROOT).

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 00:15

There's a Pontins in Suffolk (nr Lowestoft) or Park Resorts just down the road from there. Both have indoor/outdoor pools and sports facilities. They have chalets or caravans - take yer pick.

sunflowervalley · 06/01/2008 00:17

cat64-oh the windmills.
Have fond memories of the windmill at Mundesley when I was a chils and the one at Cley next the sea.

Loads of quaint cottage to rent from "Norfolk cottages",suffolk around Alderburgh and Southwold tend to be more expensiveespecially around festival time.

Wells-next-the-sea has some fab accomadation in caravans though right next to the beach

IME whichever is nearer to Southwold/ Aldeburgh/ Walberswick. All lovely places to be and near each other. So base yourself on the Suffolk Coast (officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
