velux windows cost (sorry to be boring)

sorry, this is really boring but could do with an idea of whether builder is taking the pi$$ or not. We've got a 1970s dormer bungalow and are looking to getting three velux windows installed in dd's room. The builder has quoted £1150 per window including installation & plastering - I know the windows and all the bits cost £300 each, this seems totally excessive to me. Is it?

When we had our loft done we added one more to the roof just as they started work. Medium sized. It cost us an extra £550 I seem to remember... Hope this of some help

Have you had any other quotes - probably best to get 3 written ones. I think he taking the pi$$ - do you live in a fairly affluent area or something?? I know where my brother lives builders tend to add a bit on cos they think everyones loaded However dh is a builder so bruv normally checks with him to see if he's being shafted so to speak.

Seems excessive to me too but it may depend on where in the roof you want them - is there going to be any need to cut through the purlins, the huge rafter things that hold the roof up? If so, much more work is involved than if they just need to remove slates, cut hole, fit window and replace slates around.

I would ask him why so high. If he waffles go elsewhere.

thanks I thought he was trying it on... we live near Harrogate and builders around here are overloaded with work and seem to think they can charge what they like. I'm getting so fed up with this, want to get stuff done but can't find anyone who doesn't seem to think we're rolling in it. We have a nice house but no money (my parents offered to fund the windows) as dh is a part-time student and only has a part-time salary at the moment and I'm a full time sahm - our main holiday this year was a rainy week on a campsite in Bridlington FFS. I think I'll tell the next one to not bother coming out for a quote if he's going to try to milk it.

yes - a velux window or similar shouldn't be more than £500

It does seem like a lot. I can recommend a good roofer who can install velux windows for a reasonable price, but he's in london.
