what are they really for though? You can't have a relationship with it so what is it's point?

mylittleponey · 02/01/2008 21:30

don't see what's so awful about these dolls? Yours are super james.

iHeartGok · 02/01/2008 21:31

[inappropriate lol]

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 02/01/2008 21:31

lol, well, maybe you're right dontcallmehun... I made them in about 2002 and now I have a real young baby I have to admit they aren't as appealing. Fun to make though!

chiefcookandbottlewasher · 02/01/2008 21:32

OMG that shy doll in the corner looks like the scene at the end of the Blair Witch Project!! It's taken me all this time to get over watching it and now I've regressed - may have to sleep with the light on tonight!

speak2deb · 02/01/2008 21:33

I don't care how 'realistic' they look..... it's still wierd.

noddyholder · 02/01/2008 21:33

God have looked at pictures now Truly disturbing and hideous.

anniebear · 02/01/2008 21:37

JamesAndTheGiantBanana

I thought yours were really lovely

did you used to sell many?

I cant see what the harm is if some one wants pone as an ornament (as I said, I could see my Mum with one lol lol )

bit different if you want them to cuddle and pretend to feed!!

hippipotami · 02/01/2008 21:37

James, your dolls are fab. Especially doll 2 - I took an involuntary breath when I opened that link as she is the spitting image of dd as a baby. (actually got tears in my eyes and felt a bit funny

I have to admit, I love looking at these dolls. Owning one would be a step too far, but looking at them makes me really broody (even Jo Brand look-alike baby Tommy)

MrsCarrot · 02/01/2008 21:38

I came across these by mistake when I searched sylvanian dolls on ebay. I couldnt believe it, I had to look again and again as they were so real and creepy. The premature one was especially sought after apparently, it was much more expenive than the others.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 02/01/2008 21:39

I've heard some people wheel them round in prams etc which is more than a little odd. I don't collect anything though so I obviously don't "get" it. I'm sure most are bought for the same reason people buy china dolls or steiff bears. No harm in it.

Someone mentioned dolls with heartbeats. Some reborners put small heartbeat boxes which they put in the dolls nappy, and also small hand warmer type bags which you can reuse to make the baby warm (I don't know why you'd bother with that to be honest)

You can buy newborn type reborn doll with hand moulded umbilical stumps! (again, not sure why this would appeal)

There are lots of individual touches the dollmakers use: I used to put "chicken fillet" squidgy bra doodahs in the tummy and the bottom to make mine extra cuddly.

iHeartGok · 02/01/2008 21:40

an ornament ?!

Gawd, I thought those gopping Royal Doulton ladies were hideous enough in the overpriced tacky trinkets stakes, but having one of those as an ornament boggles my tiny little brian

MrsCarrot · 02/01/2008 21:40

stumps?

Ahhhhhh! Thank you all for those links. I will now have nightmares.

hippipotami · 02/01/2008 21:43

Ah, see, I have a Steiff bear - so am I already circeling the edges of weirdness??

In my defense it was bought to me by dh when he was dp, and it was a limited edition which had the same (well very similar) name to me and dh had done a trade fair for the manufacturers and got it at trade price and I will now stop waffeling and trying to justify this....

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 02/01/2008 21:44

Thanks mylittleponey, anniebear and hippopotami. These dolls are definitely a bit "marmite" iyswim, not for everyone!

OHMYGOD, whoever said the shy dolls reminded the of the blair witch read my mind, they're a bit scary!

anniebear · 02/01/2008 21:45

Well yes I wouldnt have one as an ornament lol!!

But I wouldnt think it overly strange if the older lady across the road had one sitting on a little cushion on her bedroom dressing

now, if I saw her in Tesco and little 'Tommy' reborn was sitting in the kiddy seat in her trolley I may be more than a little concerned!

iHeartGok · 02/01/2008 21:45

Also, what is the definition of a 'professional reborn artist' ?

anniebear · 02/01/2008 21:46

sorry, meant bedroom dressing table!

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 02/01/2008 21:48

aaw hippo, you don't have to justify owning a steiff bear, they're nice. And who doesn't have a teddy or two knocking about from when they were dating?

I'm looking forward to this programme coming on, although I bet channel4 will put a "LookattheFREEAKS" slant on it, as usual.

ScaryHairy · 02/01/2008 21:49

That shy kids link is hilarious (if warped).
"Looking for something to lighten up a dark corner?"

Twinklemegan - I agree. The name "reborn" gets me too.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 02/01/2008 21:50

iHeartGok- definition of a professional reborn artist: "Someone with babyheads drying in her oven"

I shit you not.

iHeartGok · 02/01/2008 21:50

PMSL

Fuck me, 'tis a weird old World

hippipotami · 02/01/2008 21:53

The shykids are just plain odd. The one in the link at the start of this thread looks like it has something wrong with it's hips/bottom.

Why oh why would you want something so hideous in your house? How dark does that corner need to be if you need a shykid to brighten it???
