You know, it's channel 4 strikes again, really, isn't it?

I am sure that the vast majority of people (ok, women, let's face it, there won't be any blokes, will there!) who collect these dolls just do exactly that - collect them.

People collect all sorts of things - kinder toys, stamps, buttons, thimbles, barbies....you name it, someone somewhere will be collecting it.

And collectors are all a bit obsessive, goes with the territory, but their reasons for collecting aren't sad and freaky and they have normal lives alongside their collection.

Sounds like channel 4 ..yet again ... went out there to find the few nutters and present them as typical of everyone who does it.

And I personally think those dolls are nasty and creepy, but I bet that most people who have them are not trying to recapture dead babies, relatives abroad, or live the best bits of parenthood without the inconvenient reality.

I'd love to get some reborners over here, posting, so we could ripthepiss ask them about their hobby.

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:19

OMG, that rabbit one is so wrong

Flllightattendant · 03/01/2008 14:21

I totally get the ripping to pieces, I was rolling around reading this but please remember there are people who do it for less flippant reasons, see my post below...

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 14:23

Yes, I know, FA. I think counselling would be more helpful to people who've been bereaved, not a doll

NewYearBiggy · 03/01/2008 14:25

My cousin's baby looks like that one with the rabbit, so cut the comments OK???

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:26

Whatever the reasons for buying reborns, be it to fill a gap in one's life or to just be a creepy fucker. I'd like to ask one question

WHAT MAKES TOU WASH FECKING PARM WHEELS?

I can';t get over it (see many previos posts)

wheresthehamster · 03/01/2008 14:26

The thread on that forum was odd. I would've expected them to be cross and say they were misrepresented as nutters but they were PLEASED with the programme!!??

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 14:27

SY, she was a perfeckshunist (couldn't you tell from her perfect appearance and dream husband?), hence the washed pram wheels.

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:29

now, do the fake babiy peole used P&T at the supermarket?

It coul;d be the subject of endless AIBU threads

Flllightattendant · 03/01/2008 14:29

HM I think sadly the damage was done 15 years ago, when counselling wasn't that available. Terrible pity. She is hugely overweight as well, there are a lot of problems there and not all about the m/c.

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:30

as I say HGunker, Big Bird and Roland Rat (miaow!)

TheYoungVisiter · 03/01/2008 14:31

I watched the first bit of this last night and went to bed because I thought Harry had died and it was all going to be so distressing. Imagine my surprise logging onto mumsnet this morning!!

Hooray - so pleased Harry is alive and well in NZ away from Grand-Nut.

Madlentileater · 03/01/2008 14:33

Flllightattendant, your post reminded me of that really sad bit in Northern Lights where the 'severed' child is holding abit of dried fish in place of his daemon.....seems so freakish but actually tragic

sparklygothkat · 03/01/2008 14:36

omg Sue is online and I so want to look at her profile... but have to register..

TheYoungVisiter · 03/01/2008 14:37

[whisper] I have seen reborn babies for sale on mumsnet. Honestly. So be careful people... that adorable profile pic may not be what you think!

ScaryHairy · 03/01/2008 14:38

Collecting dolls is a wierd but harmless hobby so although the programme made me shudder I had some sympathy with the women buying these dolls. (Although the "reborn" concept still makes me a bit queasy).

The one I worried about was the woman having the replica of her grandson made. She should get some counselling, IMO. The extent to which her happiness seemed to hinge on being with him appeared OTT to me, and the fact that she asked her daughter to leave the boy behind when she moved to NZ took my breath away. I don't think I would speak to my mother again if she asked me to give her my child. This lady appeared to me to be so hurt I can't imagine a doll filling the void and I suspect she needs proper help to get over what she is struggling with.

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 14:42

"but overall I felt like the narrator was trying to make it sound silly and creepy."

From here

Again, surely not. Nothing silly about buying hundreds of pounds worth of products for a dolly.

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:45

Is Sue the one that looks liek Big Bird?

muppetisacat · 03/01/2008 14:46

Do you think bigbird would have sentthis one back?

SheikYerbouti · 03/01/2008 14:47

ha ha ha

Atr lease that one is intentionally creepy

sparklygothkat · 03/01/2008 14:49

yes sue is birdbird!

sparklygothkat · 03/01/2008 14:49

I like that one Muppet!!

hunkermunker · 03/01/2008 14:53

I so want to post "she's smashing"

These must've been posted before she found out this doll wasn't perfick, no?

She calls these dolls her "kids" - how are people this mental rich enough to indulge their lunacy like this?!

wheresthehamster · 03/01/2008 14:54

On hunker's link there is a poster called alienor and I can't work out what's at the bottom of her post. It looks like a cat with a wig on and blusher.....
