Darn, I missed it...am having strange attack of giggles or rather wetting myself at this thread though.
On a sad note, I have a friend who once mentioned these babies. We are both interested in antique (Victorian) dolls and she happened to mention having one of these...it wasn't spoken of again as I think she realised I don't like them, but as we got more friendly she told me that she lost a baby a long time ago, when pregnant, and then trying for years to have another with no success.
It makes me think how awful it must be to long for your own baby so much, and then end up with one of these nightmare sentimental objects because there is no other way to get close to the child you lost, or what it would have felt like to hold etc.
And then to pick up this horrible waxy thing and to find that it is only vinyl, God, God almighty the disappointment and pain.
I feel very, very fortunate not to 'need' one of them.
