Is the term housewife misogynistic: One friend thinks it is, another thinks it isn’t. They’re both SAHM’s. I’m not so am staying out of it, but am curious what others think?Hmm

What term would they prefer to be called?

I'm not sure if use misogynistic but it does define a women in terms of her relationship to a man (wife).

Homemaker is more modern isn't it?

Sahm is different to housewife/homemaker I think. I assume anyone who describes themselves as a housewife doesn't look after small children during the day.

I wouldn't say these terms are necessarily misogynistic though

I'd say not inherently, but it could be interpreted that way depending on the context it was being used in.

I don’t think it’s always misogynistic but is sometimes used in that way by people who place no value on the unpaid work done (ie someone saying “she’s just a housewife”).
