Two year age gap - did you use a double buggy?

BroccoliSpears · 17/12/2007 19:35

Did you really NEED it?

Anyone manage without?

ledogy, its ok on one of those 'kneeling' buses, where you can wheel it on, but otherwise you really need to fold it up. Its pretty big, but there is a space at the front of our buses for buggies... so it depends a lot on what your bus is like.

CarGirl · 17/12/2007 20:00

my childminder has what astrophe is selling (complete with buggy board) and she likes it so much that she has sold her powertwin!

Astrophe · 17/12/2007 20:03

yay cargirl, tell everyone how wonderful it is so that somebody will buy it from me ... Its proving harder to sell that I thought, I think because its an unfamiliar brand name (they are from Australia).

VitaSackvilleWest · 17/12/2007 20:03

sorry for hijack - know nowt about doubles, but the P&T always looks great to me.

CarGirl · 17/12/2007 20:04

I thought they went for quite a bit on ebay? I think they are the ideal childminder tool though as they are in fact a triple IYSWIM plus a big basket for lots of stuff!

Astrophe · 17/12/2007 20:07

well we bought ours on ebay for a LOT, and imported the buggy board for a lot, but saw one on ebay recently that didn't reach reserve I don't think, or went for £60 or something, which I really can't afford to let happen!

CharlieAndLolasMummy · 17/12/2007 20:08

Yes I had one (22 month gap)

No I didn't NEED it. I could have stayed in the house a lot more, basically, or used the car more often.

It makes life about 100x more bearable.

VirginiaWoolf · 17/12/2007 20:34

What about the variations on a buggy board theme? - I see you can get loads of different sorts, sit-on types etc, but afraid I don't know what they're like.

PartridgeinaRustyBearTree · 17/12/2007 20:55

I had two years & 6 weeks between mine & I got a double buggy, but the wheels kept breaking & when DD was about four months I exchanged it for a single - after that DS walked everywhere. If they'd had buggy boards in those days (DD will be 18 in Feb)I'd have used one & not bothered with a double.

RIELOVESBACARDI · 17/12/2007 20:58

i had a 16 month gap and managed with buggy board

imdreamingofawhiteKITTYmas · 17/12/2007 21:00

I will have 2 1/2 years between DD2 and this one and am getting a P&T. Mainly because I want DD2 to be secure as I will also have 4yo DD1 to contend with although she is good at walking you still have to look out for her mainly from idiots walking the other way not looking down for a small person and banging into her.

I have chosen to get a P&T as I will need a new single anyway eventually and DB3 can go in the main seat and DD2 will have an additional seat if she gets tired or I get tired IYSWIM. I like the idea of having a single with a spare seat.

CarGirl · 17/12/2007 21:01

I have to say it does depend on the personality of your toddler, dd2 was very compliant and wouldn't dream of letting go of the puschair, wandering off etc. Has long legs and would walk for ages. DD3 is a habitual escapee - absolute nightmare, dd4 is taking after her (unfortunately).

It also depend on how much car usage etc we walk a mile each way to school so unless they love the buggy board and will happily stay on it (dd2 was petrified of it and wouldn't go near it) then getting a 2 year old to walk (each way) would be traumatic. I rarely use my car live local to small town, supermarket, toddler groups etc so benefitted from having a double. Didn't get on with slings - I have a bad back and huge babies and I'm only petite myself - babies 10lbers.

What is your lifestyle like and what do you think it will be once baby arrives?

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 17/12/2007 21:05

have a 27 month gap and had a three wheeler (Maclaren MX3) with a toddler seat on the front - no way would DD have stayed on a buggy board, she's a bolter

toddler seat has mostly been dumped now (DS is 9 months) but was a v.good solution because now I just have a single pram again and am not stuck with an unused double

BroccoliSpears · 17/12/2007 21:07

Hummmmmmm.

Thank you all for replying.

I think I'll wait until the baby's born and see how I get on. I can always get one if I need one.

At the moment (ably assisted by my crazy crazy pregnant hormones) I am swinging wildly between thinking I'd be silly to try and manage without, and thinking I'd be silly to spend money we don't really have on something we don't need.

Dd is a good walker now, and we tend not to take the buggy to the park or for short trips and some shopping trips... but on the other hand I do walk to a number of things locally... but then dd hates her buggy and always wants to be free of it... but then I can't imagine getting to toddler group without strapping her in... but then she'll be older by then and might well like a buggy board...

Hummmmmmmmmmm

2.4 year age gap here. I take ds2 in sling and ds1 in buggy (he is a good walker but dawdly and we live in a city and have a 10-min adult-speed walk to the nearest public transport - no car). I love weaing ds2 - he has been in a pram about 4 or 5 times in his 12 weeks.

CarGirl · 17/12/2007 21:15

how did you get on with slings, because if you enjoyed using a sling with dc1 that could be a great & cheap solution.

whomovedmychocolate · 17/12/2007 21:15

Broccolispears - don't discount freecycle - I was just given one (albeit quite a basic side by side model) for free on our local freecycle site. Quite a few change hands on there.

Sorry Apostrophe not saying don't buy yours. Incidentally how much are you hoping to get for yours (if it's not too rude a question), I might be tempted (actually anything to avoid having to go to the bloody shops!)

sb6699 · 17/12/2007 21:30

Exactly 2 years between my two youngest. Bought a twin which ended up only being used about a dozen times over a 6 month period but there was occassions I couldn't have done without it.

I would go down the second hand route.

coby · 17/12/2007 21:33

DD1 and DD2 are (to the day 2 years apart). DD1 only started walking at 18 months so I duly went out and bought a Mothercare Phoenix (fab pushchair btw, good price too), it hardly got any use tbh but when it did I was very glad of it.

Used it for longer walks for quite some time after DD2 was born and about town for the first month or so. My DD1 is very well behaved and could be trusted to stay at my side though (not now though the little monster ).

I would say you should get one as cheap as poss and then if it gets little use you can sell it on (ebay is full or hardly used doubles!). Freecycle is a good tip, I've picked up decent pushchairs at car boot sales too. I kept my double and will be using it when DC3 arrives (due around DD1 and DD2's 4th and 2nd birthdays).

Pannacotta · 17/12/2007 21:34

Yes we use one - 2.5 year age gap but DS1 not reliable/good at doing what he is asked and also agree with cargirl about safety/warmth.
Also agree to get one second hand as you may not use it for that long.

Lizzylou · 17/12/2007 21:36

Exactly 2 years between my two boys, we got a Phil and Teds, only needed it really for a wee while, then DS1 just jumped in he back if we were on a long trip. Loved it and it really worked for us.

CarGirl · 17/12/2007 21:37

Ive just remembered the other thing - when the oldest one is really ill and you still have to get to the shops - think it was tonsillitus or some such thing that dragged on for a few days

ProfessorGrammaticus · 17/12/2007 21:39

Yes

and yes

Pannacotta · 17/12/2007 21:44
