As a relatively new Mumsnetter and Mum I am hooked on this website..I have posted twice on here about certain difficulties I was having and the advice given has been great. I am intrigued to know what you all do other than being Mums...what are your paid employments?

I have just started back to work 3 mornings as an accounts assistant for Volkswagen...anyone else...?

LOL Willow2

By the way - I work 2 days per week as a quality manager in the leisure industry.

Partner in CCTV business and local paper round, NCT volunteer doing any job that doesn't involve counting money as it's sooooo confusing for me!

anais · 16/10/2002 22:09

Www, you've been commissioned to answer Jan's question???

trudles · 16/10/2002 22:13

I'm a staff nurse on a cardiology unit and work 4 days a week. I only wish it was a 9-5 job But I am famous too as we had a tv news crew on our ward this week I had a non speaking part I was told to do something nursey so I undid a bandage then did it back up again! I was sooo proffessional.

wahey trudles. I am starstruck just being on the same thread as you

tracyhay · 16/10/2002 22:48

Droile,
I'm not clever, I just worked really hard! I love the Hawking stuff too. Astrophysics was my speciality!

McKenzie - loved your little poem! I totally agree! I was on London Today, Woman's Hour and in The Mirror and Daily Mail saying pretty much the same thing! I was the example of an (apparently) intelligent woman who cold have a good career but preferred being a mum instead. Whenever there's a work vs home debate I get rung up about it!

I'm a full time nhs manager although I'm currently looking at other options. I envy those of you who are SAHM or work p/time. Who knows may be one day I'll see the light.

cherry · 16/10/2002 23:07

I have just started working ful time in a shop, after three years of working in bars then a few months unemployed.
Although dd is at school now it is SO hard because I only get home in time to bath her and put her to bed. It's good to be back at work but I feel like I am missing so much!

WideWebWitch · 16/10/2002 23:16

This thread is sooo interesting! Scummy, we shall go to the Oxo tower, one day, if we're good. Janh, I'd love a career in pedantry, how do you get into that then?

jasper · 16/10/2002 23:48

what is the oxo tower?

susanmt · 17/10/2002 00:11

Just what I was going to ask, jasper. Oxo to me is what I use to make gravy ....

Scuba · 17/10/2002 00:21

Or noughts & crosses

mollipops · 17/10/2002 07:27

I work 14 hrs a week as a customer service officer for a bank (a fancy title for a teller!)

Azure · 17/10/2002 08:23

I'm also new to the site. I'm a financial controller for a film company, working full-time. I would love to work only 4 days a week but know I would end up with the same responsibilities, more stress and less pay.

lilly72 · 17/10/2002 08:41

Great responses...thanks for answering...I would love to eat at the oxo tower too..however I have recently had dinner at the Ivy...FANTASTIC...WWW where did you get your name? Everytime I see it I wonder what it means....

janh, like www, I too want a carrer in pedantry - I think I could be really good at it but being an amateur pedant, I need to know about pay and prospects first...

Alibubbles · 17/10/2002 10:33

Mckenzie, I love your description of what you do!

willow2 - I wish!! One thing I don't have that I would really love is a wonderful figure, how come I never get to standstill for two minutes (even the cat comes and sits on my lap in the loo!) I never lose weight?

Ghosty · 17/10/2002 10:48

I am a SAHM who used to be a primary school teacher ... and ran a Drama workshop company for kids in the hols ... and used to party all weekend ... and used to be able to drink a lot without falling asleep ... and used to be able to have a conversation that didn't involve the words 'sleep', 'potty', 'poo poo and wee wee' and 'Who's mummy's special angel pumpkin pie boy then?'

Marina · 17/10/2002 10:51

The only solution to the Oxo Tower debate is to organise a meet-up a long way ahead and throw open our spare rooms to visiting Mumsnetters. I live about 7 miles from it as the crow flies and have never been in either.

SueDonim · 17/10/2002 11:02

I'm a SAHM but in Indonesia, so I have to manage a household-full of staff. It's like having loads of children and I think I ought to be paid the going rate!! Was a pharmacy tech in a former life and also a voluntary worker for NCT and another charity in the UK.

lou33 · 17/10/2002 11:45

Fionn it's a chapterhouse one, but it's been so longsince I managed to do any I don't know if they will still grade me!

emmabee · 17/10/2002 12:11

I went back part-time to my old job as art editor on a womens' monthly magazine. It's ideal: I get two days alone with ds then I can hot foot it back to my desk to log onto mumsnet!

prufrock · 17/10/2002 12:14

I have been to the Oxo Tower - 1st wedding anniversary treat. Unfortunately I seem to have an allergy to really nice restaurants that causes me to throw up after my main course! I went straight back to the table and finished my dessert and dh still doesn't know!

Clarinet60 · 17/10/2002 12:33

Sounds like a great idea Marina. I have relatives near so wouldn't need spare room, but nice for others.
