As a relatively new Mumsnetter and Mum I am hooked on this website..I have posted twice on here about certain difficulties I was having and the advice given has been great. I am intrigued to know what you all do other than being Mums...what are your paid employments?

I have just started back to work 3 mornings as an accounts assistant for Volkswagen...anyone else...?

Spacemonkey - do you do ASP? I'm asking in the (admittedly unlikely) event of us having too many jobs at once - you know how workflow can be - nothing for months and then too much. you can email me on [email protected].

zebra · 16/10/2002 14:02

I do social science-environmental science research for a Uni., 2 days/week (telecommute on the cable modem all the hours God sends).

Catt · 16/10/2002 14:24

I'm a medical writer, part time. What do all you working mums do about school holidays/half term etc? My two aren't school age yet, but I'm already wondering how I'm going to fit their new timetables into my working week and - most crucial of all - what happens during the long summer holidays.

Viv · 16/10/2002 14:28

Catt, I would love to know how people juggle school hols too as this is dd's first year. Currently I am able to take half term off, but the summer holidays, who knows how I will cope.

Azzie · 16/10/2002 14:54

Hmm, it's my eldest's first year at school too. Our after school club (a great success so far with ds - "Why do I have to go to school first? Why can't I go straight there?" runs a play scheme during half terms (and Baker days, thank goodness). School holidays I guess we'll have to fit together a patchwork of grandmothers, aunts, great aunts, friends, summer playscheme (the after school club again), working from home, and annual leave/family holiday.

Azzie · 16/10/2002 14:55

Oops - inadvertant , sorry.

GillW · 16/10/2002 15:08

I wish I knew the answer to that one - at the moment I'm working on the principle that I'll work full time until DS goes to school, as nursery is full-time too, but will probably have to give up/find something part time once he starts school as the hours just aren't compatible. Hopefully the drop in income will be offset by not having to pay nursery fees.

zebra · 16/10/2002 15:22

I'm reckoning I can still work the equivalent of 2 days/week by working school hours only during term times. I knew another mother who did that. You need flexible bosses, though.

Kathleen · 16/10/2002 15:26

I left the 9 to 5 office inflexible office grind to take a 'flexible' work from home job as a business adviser. Its full time but allows me to take kids to school (mostly), pop out for meetings with teachers and drop off/pick up for kids activities. Sounds great? Huh, its killing me - worst of both worlds. Totally stressed but pays really well and no-one suffers but me. Sorry if I sound pathetic. I'm having a bad day.

Jaybee · 16/10/2002 15:39

I work on a software helpdesk for a large American company - lots of corporate bollocks!! Re. the summer holidays - there is a playscheme that runs at a local school (not the one that the kids attend) so they tend to go there and Grandma helps out too - for Teacher training days when the Playsheme does not run we have a working Mum's rota that we have set up between a few working Mums - usually means that I only have to take one TT Day off - but end up with a house full of other people's kids.

Janus · 16/10/2002 16:10

I'm a SAHM too.
Want to do a horticulture qualification and then work out from there what I can do with it.
Used to be a secretary and travelled all over the world, worked in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, didn't particularly like the work but it meant I could always get work wherever I was so grateful for that. Sometimes have a little itchy feet ...!

janh · 16/10/2002 16:50

WWW, sorry, just teasing - what I do mostly is pedantry, can you tell?

Congratulations on your commission and good luck with it! (What's it on?)

lou33 · 16/10/2002 17:03

lou33 - which proofreading course are you doing? I'm 3/5 of the way through the Publishing Training Centre one but haven't done any for a while as my 2-year-old has dropped his daytime sleep and I haven't worked out when I can continue the work!

bayleaf · 16/10/2002 20:57

mckenzie · 16/10/2002 21:16

I used to sell Eurobonds for a global bank in the City but now I'm a SAHM.
I used to earn very good money but now I just get the tiny child allowance.
I used to wear smart suits and high heeled shoes but now I wear jeans and trainers.
I used to go to Harvey Nichols, the Oxo Tower and all the Conran restaurants but now I go to Tumble Tots, the local park and occasionally manage a coffee in Starbucks if I can afford it.
I used to work from 7am until 5 pm but now I'm on call 24 hours a day.
I used to think I had a good life but now I know I have a GREAT life.

ScummyMummy · 16/10/2002 21:17

I don't know.. the oxo tower sounds good...

mckenzie · 16/10/2002 21:21

I took my DS to the local Harvester with a friend last friday scrummymummy and it was a nicer lunch than I ever had in the Oxo Tower. The company on friday was 100 times better and my DS was better behaved than some of my clients ever were.

ScummyMummy · 16/10/2002 21:23

That's good, mckenzie. I love eating out with my sons too and they are great company. I would like to go to the oxo tower just once though.

Willow2 · 16/10/2002 21:37

Alibubbles - you're not Shirley Conran are you?
