We have a Jane one. Did have two but one broke - the base came off (no idea how) and was left in a taxi!

The Jane didn't perform especially great in the Which tests - other non-isofix did better, so not sure if worth extra expense. Our replacement seat was the Britax HiLiner which is really good ad much cheaper.

am not sure now whethr either of these appropriate for ds1 - he's only 2.5yo so really still needs a 5-point harness

but he's too tall for his group 1 car seat

wonder whether we'll have the same problem with non-isofix seats...?

I have the same problem, my ds is just 2 and already too tall for his car seat. In theory it should last him until he is 4 or 18 kgs but he is already nearly 17kgs. I too have been looking for a 2/3 car seat with isofix and a 5 point harness. However, I can't find one at all so far. I find it quite strange that you can't get one as I would not consider my ds exceptionally tall.
