Bit random- but does anyone remember when coloured loo roll stopped being a thing?! I have memories as a child of regularly picking loo roll and debating what colour we would get- pink/blue/ mint/ cream. Piles and piles of it. I don’t remember why this changed or when but I am assuming mid 90s?? Or was it earlier Blush

Yes! I was wondering this just the other day. It was popular back when coloured bathroom suites were the norm. You bought the loo roll to match Grin.

No idea when it stopped though. I used to buy peach coloured.

Topseyt · 05/09/2021 00:59

It was ditched because the dyes used to colour it were bad for the environment.

I even read once that coloured toilet paper had to be scooped out of the filters at sewerage treatment plants whereas non-coloured dissolved much better and posed far fewer problems.

It was a long time ago now, so my memory is a little hazy, but I believe that is mostly correct.

I’d forgotten but you’ve reminded me! I can’t remember when it stopped but definitely remember the pink and mint shades.

IndecentCakes · 05/09/2021 01:04

We'd have mint, in my parents' house, to match the avocado suite Grin

I don’t remember it ever being discussed in our house just that it somehow changed from a variety of colours (my mother let us pick whichever colour we fancied) to obviously just white- maybe 90s when I was a teenager and stopped having any interest in picking the loo roll in the super market!
Kind of miss it. My kids would love having a variety of colours lol

Coloured and scented.
They were lovely.
Not good for the old fanjo, though, either.

IndecentCakes · 05/09/2021 01:12

They like the scented stuff here on the Continent. You need to be careful with the loo roll and also the tampons Shock

MissM2912 · 05/09/2021 01:12

I don’t actually ever remember having just plain white!

Scented tampons Shock

I remember reading that Simon Cowell had black toilet paper in his house.

PumpkinKlNG · 05/09/2021 01:34

I liked the Andrex pattern one they use to do not long ago!

Asda currently has Strawberry and Watermelon toilet roll, I haven't personally tried it but it just screams thrush to me

ISpyCobraKai · 05/09/2021 02:30

My Mum bought different colours, to match the different toilets, it seems so weird now.
I don't buy the weird scented stuff, but I do insist on quilted.

Stickykidney · 05/09/2021 02:38

I was talking about this the other day! I had it (blue or purple!) In my first flat in 2003... I used to love deciding what a treat!
Neighbour when I was a kid used to have quilted with printed flower on it... There's a memory!
Shame it's bad environmentally... I miss it!

IndecentCakes · 05/09/2021 04:33

Strawberry, watermelon and poo - blech!

borntobequiet · 05/09/2021 05:17

I sometimes vaguely wondered what might constitute Other Subjects. This is perfect.

I have an avocado suite and white toilet paper is far better than an unsuccessful match with mint IMO.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 05/09/2021 05:42

I used to buy blue for the tiny toilet...probably up until about 5 or 6 years ago, just a 4 pack and it would last forever cos no one ever goes out there in the winter....it was an "outside" toilet so there's no light and only a tiny window, but a porch was built so it's inside now

But yeah, no more blue loo roll bathroom stationery.

I got some of this as 2020 Christmas presents

We always had plain white (or off-white less bleached recycled). But my best friend's DMum always got pale blue for upstairs (matched the bathroom) and peach downstairs. I was so envious!

Fubitch · 05/09/2021 05:54

Tesco sent me coloured loo roll as a substitution this week!!! It's only cream, but it looks horrible, really yellow. Dh accepted it, I wouldn't have Grin

Fubitch · 05/09/2021 05:56

We used to have blue in the bathroom and pink in the downstairs loo. We also kept our loo roll in the kitchen, which was really handy Grin

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 05/09/2021 06:35

I’ve got some vague memory that Jilly Cooper was wildly scathing about coloured loo paper, because it’s “frightfully common”.

We’ve decorated our downstairs loo in an undersea theme so I buy the blue and put it out when we have parties, i think it’s quirky but too expensive to use all the time.
