21 birthday

Hi!

Can someone explain to me why 21st birthday is such a big deal in the UK?

I am foreign and just don't get it at all. It doesn't provide an individual with any additional rights as you already get them at 16 ( marriage, voting in Scotland where I live) and at 18 (alcohol etc). 18 doesn't appear to be especially celebrated, nowhere near as lavishly as 21 does.

Where I'm from 18 is massive because you officially become an adult- get voting rights, driving license, can get married etc.

Why 21 then? Just why? HmmSmile

It used to be that 21 was the coming of age date in England, it changed in 1970. But traditions hold and any excuse for a party.
Same where I am from it's 14, 16 18 and the now meaningless 21.
