izzybiz · 30/11/2007 16:03

Im getting married in 5 weeks, and need a nice Hymn for the service, we arent regular church goers, and so the only Hymns Dp and I can remember are the ones we sang at school, any ideas??

Also we need to choose a nice love song to have playing in the background as we sign the register, I cant think, my brain is too full at the moment! Nothing tooo cheesey though!

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2007 16:09

Praise my Soul the King of Heaven, is good

Bread of Heaven/ Gide me Oh thou great Redeemer, v rousing (esp if Welsh folk in congregation)

The pachabel Canon is nice when played on the organ

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2007 16:11

Im getting married Decc 22nd so close!!

teuch · 30/11/2007 16:14

Be Our Chief Guest Lord to the tune of morning has broken. It as one of ours and the words are quite nice. Will see if I can find a link.

Nothing with too many verses...sometimes they just go on, and on, andon, and on.....

I accidentally missed a verse of How Great thou Art in our order of service .

As for signing of registry, maybe go for some kind of instrumental of a familiar love song since it is SO difficult to get lyrics that exactly match your circumstances and taste. Just something that most people would recognise and htink was romantic like 'First time ever I saw you face' or a classical tune that people would be familiar with?

madamez · 30/11/2007 16:16

Fight The Good Fight With All Thy Might ?

Popular ones: Love Divine ALl Loves Excelling
ALl THings Bright And Beautiful (though missing out the politically incorrect verse about knowing your place)
Lord Of The Dance

Jerusalem (unless one or both of you is not English and feels it would be a bit insensitive)

Those are mostly hymns that most people who were schooled in the UK over the past 30 years or so know: obscure ones are not much cop if the bulk of the congregation haven't been to church since primary school.

As to the nice song to play in the background for the signing - will this be played on the organ (snurk, sorry) or on a CD player? And how strict is the vicar about secular music in church ie would he object to Robbie WIlliams Angels - OK so I would on the grounds of musical taste but that's another matter...

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2007 16:16

Praise my soul

Guide me oh thou great Redeemer

I am singing here....with a tear....had both of these at my wedding

teuch · 30/11/2007 16:16

Oh Love Divine as madamez recommends is lovely too

Tigerschick · 30/11/2007 16:28

My cousin had "One More Step Along the Road I Go" which I thought was a bit unusual until I spoke to a few people at the reception and they said that, in their esperience, it was really popular - especially as pretty much everyone knows it.

Tigerschick · 30/11/2007 16:29

Or even experience.

TellusMater · 30/11/2007 16:35

We had "Make me a channel of your peace" and "Now thank we all our God" and "Praise my soul the King of Heaven"

And the St Anthony Chorale (just the organ).

luciemule · 30/11/2007 16:43

Lord of the Dance
Praise My Soul the King of Heaven
The Lord's My Shepherd (numerous versions)

for love song - how about 'Come What May' sung by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. It's lovely and I almost sang it at a friend's wedding.

littleboo · 30/11/2007 16:46

we got married on 26th Nov and had Christmas carols, it was lovely. Also had Jerusalem ( my school hymn. Am not a church goer, but it was lovely. my friend played Ave Maria whislt we were signing ( on cello)

izzybiz · 30/11/2007 16:51

This is all great! Keep them coming ladies! Thanks again.

northender · 30/11/2007 17:01

We had "Will your anchor hold in the storms of life" . It raised a few eyebrows!

FromGirders · 30/11/2007 17:15

We had All Things Bright and Beautiful (what verse about knowing your place? not in my hymn book!) then "As man and Woman we were made" here which is to the tune of the Sussex carol, and has a nice verse at the end about heading off to a party. It's a bit unusual too, the only other person I know who had it was my brother. (Cue lots of mners telling me they had it too . . )

susiemj · 30/11/2007 17:24

Sluberdegullion - we must be twin souls - i had these two at my wedding aswell! Plus - Love Divine All Loves Excelling.

Um - please - I don't mean any offence - can I say that some churchgoers don't find Lord of the Dance very approptiate to a wedding. I know it's a popular one...

Slubberdegullion · 30/11/2007 17:51

susie . I love that one too. Cannot remember for the life of me what out third hymn was, something suitably love-ish.

Our organist (a family friend) played some beautiful Bach while we signed the register....well that is what we asked for. Half way through I realise the congregation in in fits of giggles only to discover he has Bach-efied Walzing Mathilda and the Neighbours theme tune (I'm half Aussie and DH and I met in Oz). v funny.

I had a really pretty hymn called "come to a wedding" sung to the tune of "morning has broken"

here is a link

(whisper - it's also not too godly so good for non-church goers!)

tortoiseSHELL · 30/11/2007 18:52

We had Guide me O thou Great Jehovah
All my Hope on God is Founded
All People that on Earth do Dwell

Other good ones - Love Divine (to tune Blaenwern), Praise my Soul the King of Heaven, Praise to the Lord the Almighty,
