in the same vain of songs what films make you blubber?

OP posts:

pre ds i affected a very stony hearted, stiff upper lip approach to films - there was no way i was going to be manipulated into blubbing at a movie. exceptions were, the deerhunter, the elephant man, sophie's choice plus probably a few others i can't remember. i don't count the lumps in throat only the actual tears!

post ds, almost anything makes me cry, even (especially?) the news, definitely if it involves a parent/child issue - so probably couldn't even bear to view sophie's choice now.

i love it's a wonderful life - watch it every time it's on.

prufrock - reading through this thread more carefully, looks like i have got it wrong with peyton place, but i do remember the movie and being so upset that the black mother had to conceal her identity and offer to be her daughter's maid just to see her... and the offer was rejected... sob! for the literary equivalent, see the human stain by philip roth - such a misogynist, but nonetheless an excellent novel!

i'm rambling now!

bossykate · 13/10/2002 22:49

prufrock, i think it's "peyton place".

hmb · 14/10/2002 07:18

Agree with 'imitation of life', and also 'It's a Wonderful life'. When I saw Scindlers List in the cinema, no-one got up at the end, because everyone was crying. I also weep buckets at Wen Harry met Sally. And because I am bonkers, I also cry at the end of Life Story, the horizon film with Tim Pigot Smith and Jeff Goldbloom, about the discovery of the structure of DNA! See, I told you I was bonkers

Another vote for It's a Wonderful Life. Quite apart from all the warm-hearted sentiment, I weep buckets when the director decides that the best way to demonstrate how Donna Reed's life would have been empty without Jimmy Stewart is to show that she became the town librarian. Cheers, Hollywood.

bundle · 14/10/2002 10:33

It's a Wonderful Life (again), The Inn of the 6th Happiness (Chinese children - filmed in Wales, of course - marching over the hills singing This Old Man..as they escape to a better life with Ingrid Bergman ), Truly Madly Deeply (had just been through traumatic breakup when I first saw it), Breaking The Waves - sheer emotional impact..oh there's loads

Casablanca

monkey · 14/10/2002 11:52

I'll cry at anything soppy/miserable. Dh just got Gladiator out & I cried at that. I hate 'miserable' films & if anyone says they've seen a film & they cried I won't watch it. I have not seen Kramer vs. Kramer or ET to this day - the later a real feat given my age.

So thanks for this thread, custardo, these are all the films I'll be avoiding like the plague!

Give me a comedy any day of the week.

The Railway Children. Gets me every time.

bundle · 14/10/2002 13:36

oh god, emmabee, not the Railway children! when she says 'daddy' at the end....you've started me off!

Hilary · 14/10/2002 14:37

Hurray Monkey, to date I am the only person I know not to have seen ET - now I am one of two! What a select group we are! I was about 7 when it came out and everyone I knew went to see it straight away, not me!

emmabee · 14/10/2002 15:18

That's exactly the moment, Bundle. The train pulls out, the steam starts to clear, she starts to run....sob!

emmabee · 14/10/2002 15:19

Also, I have never seen ET either. I can't stand Spielberg in mawkish-kiddie mode.

Tinker · 14/10/2002 19:13

The Railway Children is fantastic for that moment. I actually brace myself for when it comes and revel in it.

Agree about Schindler's List and Kramer v Kramer as well!

Tinker · 14/10/2002 19:13

Oh, and how could I forget Life is Beautiful!!

bundle · 14/10/2002 19:16

Emmabee, Tinker..it never fails, does it, even when you know it's coming?? sob. I feel all tingly just thinking about it.

Tinker · 14/10/2002 19:19

bundle - wasn't there a remake of it a few years ago and it just wasn't the same. The tone of the girl's voice was just WRONG!!

'Daddy, my daddy' but sort of as well!

bundle · 14/10/2002 19:20

tinker, glad I missed that one, by the sound of it. those red bloomers could never be re-created in my opinion! and to think Jenny Agutter & Sally Thomsett were probably in their mid 20s when they were supposed to be pre-pubescent

Marina · 14/10/2002 19:45

I found myself crying at the bit in Harry Potter where he sees his parents in the Mirror of Erised.

Janus · 14/10/2002 20:43

Bossykate, agree with Elephant Man, sob, sob and as for Sophie's Choice I really don't think I could watch it now.
Another one for me is The English Patient, I just loved it.
Must watch The Railway Children next time it's on, haven't seen it!

Terms of Endearment, the deathbed scene with her oldest son..

hmb · 15/10/2002 07:39

Oh, and I cry in Toy Story 2 when Jessie sings the song about Emily. Tough trying to explain that one to the kids!

Azzie · 15/10/2002 09:34

Hilary and Monkey, I've never seen ET either (he gives me the creeps) so that makes 3 of us.

As for crying, Mrs Doubtfire - but only since having kids.
