So ladies, who fancies doing the Playtex Moonwalk to raise cash for breast cancer research? I did it a couple of years ago (couldn't this year as had just given birth to the twins) and it was FANTASTIC! 15,000 women and about 1,000 men walking in bras through the night to raise cash. Victoria Wood did a programme on it recently. You walk 26.2 miles (full moon) or 13.1 miles (half moon). Great fun. Fancy it? Anyone?

Am I being thick, or just blind?

Anyone in N London and want to do some training?

emmatmg · 09/11/2004 17:25

I saw the programme about this and would love to do it next year.

Count me in, I walk everywhere as it is so adding abit more each day as training won't be too hard.

Gonna email to everyone I know.

MarsLady · 09/11/2004 22:24

Where in north London are you Arabica?

I'm really keen to do this, and have sent details to them.. will need someone to train with tho..
anyone in West London interested?

Arabica · 09/11/2004 22:38

Hi Marslady, I am in the lovely Stoke Newington. But, of course, am willing to walk to my training session!

MarsLady · 09/11/2004 22:51

I'm in Muswell Hill. We tend to walk to Barnet and Whetstone. We also walk around Hampstead Heath. I say we because I walk with two friends

I'm a real beginner when it comes to power-walking, and haven't looked at the training schedule they recommend on the site. How far do you walk and at what kind of pace? Cos I would be willing to travel to Hampstead--it's easy to get to on train.

MarsLady · 10/11/2004 17:27

Hi Arabica. We power walk. Not sure if we would be too much use to you yet. After the first Moonwalk that we did we continued to walk. We tend to do 10 miles or more. If you can find someone closer to you to start off with and build up your mileage etc then you would be welcome to join us. Don't want to put you off but I would hate for you to join us and for you to become disheartened. It doesn't take long to build up your mileage, but I would suggest that you take it slowly at first. I'm sure they have a training schedule on the website. If I get time I'll look it out for you. Hope this doesn't offend. Mars

None taken. I think I'll take your advice and find another beginner, you ladies sound super-fit! Any low-power walkers out there in N or E London?

charliecat · 11/11/2004 20:12

I do an hour walking day and night (2 hours) just on the school run...at speed as we wake up late!...will i need to do anymore? Cant bear the thought...

MarsLady · 11/11/2004 20:58

Yes Charliecat you will have to do more. The whole moonwalk took us about 7 hours when we did it. You just build up bit by bit. If you walk with a friend or two it's much easier. One of my friends gave a running commentary on who lived where, which houses she liked and how she would redecorate or even knock down and start again some of the houses on route. It's great fun, good to be out of the house. Initially we treated ourselves with a large glass of wine on returning home. When the walks got longer it was a bath and a hot cup of cocoa. lol. Seriously though, yes, you'll have to do more than an hour but you feel so good afterwards. I still feel amazing and it was almost 2 years ago that I did the walk.

I live in muswell hill/east finchley and would be interested in doing the moonwalk but am incredibly unfit - would need to train very slowly if body is not going to give up on me.

MarsLady · 12/11/2004 16:55

cat me lucy01 and we'll get together with some gentle walks. I'm nearby and happy to get you started.

Downloaded training schedule for beginners and have just come back from first walk--took me 14 mins to do a mile and I don't think I could have gone much faster. I could cycle for miles and miles quite quickly but power-walking is completely different. Thank goodness there's a long time to go before the Moonwalk.

MarsLady · 16/11/2004 23:23

Well done Arabica.

Still seeking West London training buddies..

I did a walk.. 3 miles on Saturday.. with a local group..wasn't rushing took about 45 minutes..
Some are going to do the walk I think but only 13.5 miles... i wanna do the lot!!!

Felt really good afterwards.. (well apart from stiffness day after!!)
Need to do more...

Marslady do you train at night?

MarsLady · 16/11/2004 23:38

Initially we trained during the day. When the walks got to about 10 plus miles we started walking in the evening. It was a whole different feel. It got us in the mood for the moonwalk. We realized that we were more tired in the evening and would have to make plans to have easy days in the run up to the walk. Also it wasn't practical to do the long walks in the day. School pickup kept getting in the way.
