Considering the people, schools, amenities, shops, bars, restaurants, traffic, surrounding countryside where would you choose for you and your kids to live in the UK + why?

well i live in watford, and have been thinking that i would like to move away from here to somewhere else in the UK, just not sure where. it's okay here, but the people can be very rude, and traffic is a nightmare, plus ive been here all my life, although it does have a lot of advantages. but i would like to move on to somewhere different. r u thinking of moving elsewhere?

Are you thinking of moving?

lou33 · 06/11/2004 20:13

I try

Thought you were having an early night? Or was that just a feeble excuse not to come for a drink?

jmg1 · 06/11/2004 20:14

I live in the South East (kent) and was brought up in Nottingham. Both are places I'd be happy to bring up my kids. Have also lived in the lake district, Hull and Slough. Slough has a bad reputation but is fine for amenities and close to London for days out, Hull has a nice 'community' feel and the Lakes is perfect for an outdoorsy upbringing but where I was was awful for amenties. Hope that's not to incoherent for you!

lou a couple of glasses of wine, a couple of posts and I am off for an early night.
I will come over for a few beers with your Dh soon.

I would love to live in Scotland myself - 'specially Edinburgh but too expensive!

lou33 · 06/11/2004 20:16

Yeh but what about me?!

hatter · 06/11/2004 20:16

Oxford. Totally beautiful. Very cultural. Dynamic. Diverse. Good restaurants/shops etc. Very easy access to open countryside - ie you can cycle to it in less than 10 minutes from the centre of town. Easy access to London if you want. Perfect imo. Hope to livethere (again) one day

jmg1 · 06/11/2004 20:17

ok lou tell your dh I'll be over for a few beers with you soon

snap, hatter (in fact, I thought it might be you'd who'd started this thread!). But too expensive for us.

Gobbledigook · 06/11/2004 20:23

Hi all! Tis me (old name = 5 letters, related to 'ice').

I would live right here! Got it all IMO - excellent network of friends, top schools, major city 20 mins away, gorgeous countryside 10 mins away, major international airport 10 mins away.....For me, it's perfect .

DH agrees even though he only moved here for me - ahhh!

marthamoo · 06/11/2004 20:24

Yes, 'tis me, back from the wilderness (well, I have been around - just not posting much)

hercules · 06/11/2004 20:24

Gobbledigook · 06/11/2004 20:25

Oh no, I'm going to give away my identity on this one!

South Manchester/North Cheshire.

jampot · 06/11/2004 20:25

You must live right by me then Gobbledigook

lou33 · 06/11/2004 20:25

I have missed you I have

zephyrcat · 06/11/2004 20:25

All my family are from Aberdeen and I would love to live up thst weay some day. I grew up in Reading and really loved it. We moved 2 years ago to a little village in between Andover and Salisbury and although the countryside and the villages are lovely it's very isolated compared to a big city and I miss that terribly. DP llived in Ilfracombe for 10 years so that may well be an option in the next year or so because the school dd would have to go to here is way way way below national average in its ofsted report

Gobbledigook · 06/11/2004 20:26

I'm I Jampot?

I CAT you earlier - did you get it?
