Considering the people, schools, amenities, shops, bars, restaurants, traffic, surrounding countryside where would you choose for you and your kids to live in the UK + why?

Northumberland without a doubt, particularly Ponteland or Morpeth. Worcester is really nice but the secondary schools are RUBBISH!

DH would prefer Cornwall, so I guess we'll be staying in Worcester as it's midway between the two.

We liked Bordeaux very much when we visited a few years ago, but we had an amusing experience. We parked our car on the quayside and walked through some winding backstreets towards the city centre. We both found ourselves thinking that this must be a friendly neighbourhood, as oldish women were sitting outside several of the houses, apparently taking the morning air (it was 10am). Then we realised that they were curiously underdressed ... What innocents we are.

Apparently Oxford has the most polluted air of any town in UK. I remember getting bronchitis every winter I lived there (5 years) and have never had it before or since. I think its because of the 2 rivers in a valley - constant fog and mist in winter. Plus the coldest I've ever known in England, one winter it was more than minus 20.
I could never again live so far away from the sea having lived on the coast for nearly 20 years now. Constant fresh air.

gobbledigook, no we live in Herts, just love Nantwich. Wonderful town, Tudor buildings, old square with entertainment at the w/e. Lovely individual and specialist shops. Great food in the pubs too!

codswallop · 08/11/2004 18:09

I am very happy in salisbury
the army is easily avoided Ime

BadHair · 08/11/2004 18:10

Secondhandrose - I live near Nantwich and there's bog all for kids to do. Or teenagers for that matter. One of those chocolate box places with nothing inside, if you get my drift.
But very pretty, it has to be said.

codswallop · 08/11/2004 18:10

agree about being near the coast

codswallop · 08/11/2004 18:12

zephyr are you in grately or somewhere?

treacletart · 08/11/2004 18:19

another vote for Brighton - it's got fantastic resources for kids, brilliant public transport, stacks of culture, the beach, the south downs and a fast link to London ... its true that property's pricey though

fio2 · 08/11/2004 18:22

I like Chester and Canterbury and Ludlow and York

is there a common theme to that?

fio2 · 08/11/2004 18:24

what do you agree about coddy re. coast?

dont move to coast if you get lonely easily, or have mental health problems

I have started to 'lose' myself down the beach, dont know whether that is a good thing or a bad thing

This is 50 yards from the house we're moving to next Tuesday.

Middle of nowhere, but 40 mins drive from the centre of Glasgow.

Nice country pubs.

No traffic apart from the occasional forestry commission truck

A highland cow next door

Ben Lomond in our back garden

Loch Lomond is our front garden

Local school has 21 pupils and good OfSted report.

40 mins away from my mum and dad, compared to 7 hours at the moment.

4 bed house with 3 reception rooms for the same price as our smelly ex-council house in Herts.

Simple choice really!

zubb · 08/11/2004 19:52

another Salisbury vote here - it's got everything really, and agree with Coddy, not army dominated at all, only moved here by accident really, but wouldn't want to leave.
Loved living in Brighton as well.

jmg1 · 08/11/2004 19:54

salisbury and the north east seem to be doing well on here.

gothicmama · 08/11/2004 19:55

thanks for summarising saves me reading County Durham or cornwall for me tho

wobblyknicks · 08/11/2004 20:30

gm - Cornwall only if you're ready to give up on life, buy yourself a pair of slippers and shuffle round town saying 'drrrectly' and calling everyone 'me 'andsome'!!!

Tommy · 08/11/2004 21:05

Salisbury's a bit parochial for me - everyone knows everyone else!!

lou33 · 08/11/2004 21:05

Hey wobbs, maybe jmg and his kids could move into your house, and you could have his!

wobblyknicks · 08/11/2004 21:08

lou - I defo wouldn't mind having his but I don't think that jmg wants to live with my parents, somehow!!! How about if I keep his cute kids and move up there and he moves in with 2 of my mates - 24yrs old, 1 blonde, 1 brunette - both too gorgeous for my liking???

gothicmama · 08/11/2004 21:12

so no surf dudes with attitude then WK

lou33 · 08/11/2004 21:15

can't see him refusing such a good deal somehow

wobblyknicks · 08/11/2004 21:17

Lol lou - thought that might be a better bargain!! They only have a room each tho, so he'd have to share with someone - reckon that would put him off?

gm - surfers for me? Not atm - they're all hibernating for the winter. There's some tasty dj's around but they're a nocturnal species and I don't get out much!!!
