How to tax a car before I pick it up?

Hi there

I should probably have thought about this before now! But I’m buying a car tomorrow and I need to tax it, but not sure how to until I get all the documents/ v5 etc?

Can anyone advise?

They often do it in the store for you. Or just go online as long as you know the registration number. You don't need a piece of paper.

You can tax it online before driving away, once you have the documents.

Online. We did it that way at the dealers. But presumably you could also do it that way in a private sale - you just need the documents in front of you. That way you both you and the seller update on line. You do still have to send the paperwork v5 off in the post as well.
