What has happened to UKparents

Anyone know what has happened to UKParents - where am I going to sell my nappies now?

I know they've had a lot of problems lately. The new look site was a nightmare to me - but they have suddenly just gone!

I know they were "the other site" and perhaps its a bit tactless to raise this hear but is always sad to see something go - and it was THE BEST place to sell nappies!

God forbid anything like that should happen to mumsnet.

Might be £4.98 tomorrow! Sorry SP - the fiver thing was for Lou's roving reporter role.

Re paying to advertise, if we went for it, think we'd go for a one-off annual fee - operated much like subs (assuming this is technically viable)

SenoraPostrophe · 04/11/2004 21:34

gotcha. That would be better, yes.

Lou is worth so much more than a fiver. I'll add 50p.

zebra · 04/11/2004 21:37

Misdee -- I got your email where you said you're waiting before you buy more, is that what you mean?

£5/year is reasonable. I'd say 45 or 60 days, though, not just 30.

zebra · 04/11/2004 21:38

Maybe we could auction Lou off as a fundraiser for MN?

lou33 · 04/11/2004 21:42

I doubt you'd even get a fiver for me. thanks for the support senora!

Justine you are a tough one

Justine (mumsnet) · 04/11/2004 21:50

So categories-wise of the top of my head thinking:
cloth nappies
pushchairs
cots/travel cots
toys
clothes
highchairs
slings
books
feeding equipment/ breast pumps
monitors
other

what have I missed?

Justine (mumsnet) · 04/11/2004 21:53

This is for wanted/ for sale board by the way - should probably have spelled that out

SenoraPostrophe · 04/11/2004 21:55

sounds good.

lou33 · 04/11/2004 21:56

vids/dvds?

misdee · 04/11/2004 21:56

can i sell my kids? or loan them out? the eldest one is good at housework (she is 4?)

Justine (mumsnet) · 04/11/2004 22:02

Think we might need some sort of special licence for that misdee.

Demented · 05/11/2004 13:58

I'm not sure about charging for the small ads as personally if I had to pay I would just put them on ebay as you have a larger audience there.

Furball · 05/11/2004 14:03

How about if you are an up to date mumsnet subscriber it's free? If you're not then you have to subscribe. More revenue for mumsnet. Not sure how it would be 'policed' though against non subscribers.

zebra · 05/11/2004 14:05

Or you can place ads as long as your subs are a minimum value (since the value of subs is voluntary?)... £10 or £15 as the minimum? And anybody (sub'd or not) can read the ads.

With Ebay you still have to pay listing etc. fees.

SecondhandRose · 05/11/2004 18:55

Hi Justine, the one problem (thankfully rare)at UKP is that some people sold things, took the money then either didn't send them or they just disappeared from the board. There was another woman who regularly said parcels weren't turning up and asking for refunds. She was recently found to be selling the items that hadn't turned up on Ebay.

UKP were going to organise 3 strikes (complaints)and you're out (banned).

I would like to see the seller's email address visible in an advert (not anonymous as it is at the moment).

I would like to see a fee for sellers too as maybe this would put off some would-be fraudsters. £15 for the year seem reasonable?

SecondhandRose · 05/11/2004 18:59

How about

For sale - Clothes
General
Gifts
Slings/Carriers
Maternity
Cloth Nappies

Wanted too don't forget

May be everything else you mentioned could come under Baby Equipment

Demented · 05/11/2004 19:10

That's what I mean Zebra, if I had to pay say £15 a year to sell things with MN as I don't sell loads of stuff (only bits and bobs of the kids clothes, the odd book etc) it would probably work out roughly the same to sell them through ebay and as Secondhandrose says you wouldn't have the same protection here as you do on ebay.

mieow · 05/11/2004 23:26

I have recievd an email from UKparent saying what has happened, if anyone want to know, let me know

MissHoolie · 06/11/2004 14:39

Sorry for the length but this is the e-mail that I had from UKP. I assume its the same as Miaow's.

Dear UKp Members

Firstly, may I apologise for the chaos over the last twenty four hours. I must take full responsibility and feel I at least owe you an explanation.

I made a decision some months ago to try and improve the functionality of the site and bring to you a suite of new products. I put my trust in a software house to deliver an improved site which was launched earlier this month. Unfortunately my trust was misplaced. The finished article was not as requested and failed to deliver something we could work with. After three months work on both sides the gulf between us was too wide and as a result the two companies have gone their separate ways.

Part of the technical solution was that they were in control of the hosting and overall administration of the site. So it was their decision to "pull the plug".

We are now back in control and hosted elsewhere and can assure you of our continued commitment. The message you have read on the site was an attempt to attract the community away to something they have been creating behind the scenes. I am very surprised that a company who has other communities would act in this manner however that?s life!

For the avoidance of doubt I can confirm for those of you who have had interaction with staff members the following.

Susan , Steve, Tracy and Carolyn are the team. Simon, Philip, Nabil, Omar, Jim and any staff of a company called Bibliotech have no connection with ukp .

I am e mailing all members to explain the situation but would ask you to rally round and help re-establish the community the best you can .

I know we can do it.

John Hodgson

Our Next Steps: Returning To The "Old" UKparents Website

We have decided to return to the "old" UKparents website for now. Though the old site experienced a few problems, it is still a force to be reckoned with. Once we have restored the old site - we're hoping to get it up by Wednesday, 10th of November, and our members are using it again, we intend to take a step back, review the site and plan our next steps.
In the meantime, please be aware we are reverting back to a copy of the site dated 1 September 2004 - the most recent copy we have of UKparents. Therefore it is important you note of the impact this has on you, a UKp member:

You will revert back to your old UKparents username and password, as well as your old UKp Member Profile (the one you used up until 1 September)*
If you amended your username after 1 September and/or got a new username with the new system (e.g. spaces in your username were replaced by underscores, etc.) - please revert back to your "old" UKparents username*
Those of you who registered as a new member on the site between 1 September and 4 November will have to reregister on the site.
All discussion messages posted between 1 September and 4 November will be lost. · All your ukparents.co.uk emails will be lost.
All additional services enjoyed on the new site launched on 4 October will be lost (i.e. email, photo albums, file storage, site builder).
And very importantly - there are 2 of you who registered for a Gold Membership - please contact us urgently.
*IMPORTANT: If you have forgotten your username and password, please contact the UKp Team as follows:
Carolyn (Assistant Editor) - [email protected]
Tracey (Assistant Editor) - [email protected]
UKp Management - [email protected]

Demented · 06/11/2004 16:46

No so fussed on mumsonline as they bar you if you don't post often enough and I can't be bothered writing grovelling e-mails asking to be let back in.

popsycal · 06/11/2004 16:53

Demented - you are not banned. To get reactivated you simply have to send an email with 'reactivation' in the title. As far as I understand, no one has ever been refused.

Anyway - the classifieds are open to all. You don't need to register to buy and sell there.

popsycal · 06/11/2004 16:54

correction - you dont have to register to read the classifieds...
