This subject came up over Sunday lunch yesterday. We had some Belgian and Italian friends to lunch and they were wondering about it.

who did the welsh overthrow then?

@ president gary bushell. I don't think that will happen. we might get some slimey ex mp (president jeffrey archer?) but if elections didn't run at the same time as westminster elections, it would still be a better system overall (prez archer + prime minister brown > better than prime minister cameron no?

Ah now, I didn't say that the Welsh actually successfully ovewthrew anyone, did I? I just said that they were willing to have a go. Quite good at digging their heels in and making things difficult for invaders in a passive-aggressive sort of a way, before total and humiliating capitulation.

Actually, I think you are right about the president thing. I have just Changed My Mind On Mumsnet®!

Horror emoticon at President Jeffry Archer ...

Much to my own surprise, for the reasons below, I think I'm starting to develop republican leanings ...

Or perhaps it's just the way it's all reported. Happy for the Queen and Philpots that they celebrated 60 yrs of marriage, but does it have to be one of the major items on the BBC news?????
