help ! we are trying to find the name of a hymn which we loved at school for a funeral (next week)- it is the one about the Star of the Sea - any Catholics out there who can remember it,or it's proper title ??

Binker, Google usually are worth a look - I found this (not being a Catholic I have not heard of this hymn):

Hail, Queen of Heaven the Ocean Star;
Guide of the wand'rer here below;
Thrown on life's surge we claim thy care,
Save us from peril and from woe.
Mother of Christ, Star of the Sea,
Pray for the wanderer, pray for me.

O gentle, chaste and spotless Maid,
We sinners make our prayers through thee;
Remind thy Son that he has paid
The price for our iniquity.
Virgin most pure, Star of the Sea,
Pray for the sinner, pray for me.

Jodee - thank you - I'm not sure if it is the one I want though - I'm sure there was some Latin in it somewhere- but many thanks for pointing me towards Google !

ah, i think i know the hymn you mean. the first verse goes (iirc):

mary immaculate, star of the ocean,
chosen before the creation began,
chosen to bring for thy bridal adorning,
woe to the serpent and rescue to man.

can't remember the whole thing but a later verse contains the line:

mater amabilis, ora pro nobis.

will have a hunt round and see if i can find the rest.

well, all i have found is that it is "mary immaculate, star of the morning" (not ocean) have found a couple of other verses but they are not at all what i remember.

maybe i have got this completely mixed up with another hymn!

sorry.

good luck in your search.

bossykate - the latin bit was the bit I was thinking of ! that must be the right one-though it doesn't sound familiar. My dad (it's my great aunt's funeral) thinks we might go with the Ave Maria they sing at Lourdes which is also a favourite. thanks for your help !

bossykate - just typed the Mater amabilis,ora pro nobis into Google and it came up !! - it starts Ave Maria,O maiden,O Mother,
fondly thy children are calling to thee;
thine are the graces unclaimed by another,
sinless and beautiful Star of the Sea...
hooray !
thanks again (now hope that the organist can play it !)
