When one asks an innocuous question ......

..requiring a simple factual reply, why do so many of you feel the need to interpret it's real meaning and thus give unasked for advice?

Err.... what sort of questions were you thinking of?

say I was to ask if anyone knows where I could get a good quality black umbrella from? I might get the reply, 'Why do you need an umbrella? Don't let the weather rule your life.' - that sort of thing.

Oh, I see. I don't tend to give answers like that tbh, in fact I'm often tempted to reply to questions with one-word answers (but I don't because I feel it may be a little rude).

because it no-one did that then threads on MN would be about 10 answers long and it would be an altogether dull place to be

well - I'll see how it goes - I have a strong sneaky suspicion the thread will die a death - with me talking to myself and I'll probably head back downstairs to watch something cr*p on TV, choose one of our (many) DVD's to watch or play on teh PS2

why do you want an umbrella? why a black one? what about a hat? a hood? a plastic rainmac?
