can anybody save my life and tell me how to get scorch marks out of a brand new coat.

Sorry mumofelise, but I wouldn't have thought there was anything you could do about a scorch mark. It's not as though its a stain, is it? Is it somewhere obvious??? Someone else may be along later with some more useful advice!

Scorching causes permanent damage, so unless it's only minor there may be nothing you can do.

If the coat is machine washable, gently brush the area to remove the worse charring, rub liquid detergent in and then wash the coat.

To remove a scorch mark from linen or white cotton fabric, dip a piece of old fabric in hydrogen peroxide, lay it on the scorched portion of the fabric, and rub with a hot iron (not too hot). If it doesn't work the first time, repeat until the stain is completely removed.

Try looking in tipking.com under the laundry section. It gives tips on most stains, etc. Whether or not it does scorch marks, I'm not sure. I did read something in a magazine a little while ago, but can't remember which one. I'm just putting the kids to bed, then I'll see if I can find it, but we've just had a grand sort out, so don't hold your breath...
