Sounds pretty usual, round my way at least. The adults (if there are any) are usually at a discreet distance, though sometimes there aren't any at all. I'm just ready for them - bowl of fudge and toffee and my junior vampire ready to do the business!

jampot · 31/10/2004 17:36

quite old then?

we've had them as young as about 5 on their own - it completely sickens me

misdee · 31/10/2004 17:40

i am unprepared for trick or treaters. have no sweeties at all in the house. have only been here a few months and didnt have a clue what the people here are like. Its mainly an OAP area as well. some of the people are gonna be scared tonight.

i dont go in for all the halloween stuff. dd1 asked about it this morning, told her we didnt celebrate halloween, but we are having fireworks next week.

5!? well I definitely wouldn't let dd and ds (once they're old enough) go on their own! They'd reak way too much havoc . Seriously I think it's not on parents leaving their 5 year olds unsupervised. God knows what could happen!

jampot · 31/10/2004 17:46

exactly mrsd - I dont have a problem with trick or treaters as long as its done responsibily.

misdee · 31/10/2004 18:40

hmm dd2 has just gone to sleep, might go put a note on my door saying dont knock.

We have just come back from a halloween party. On the walk back home we called in houses, but only those that are decorated or have lit pumpkins. That is how it works round with us. The pumpkins signal if people are open for visitors. My kids are now getting ready for bed and we have had a few more callers, all little ones with parents in tow. All very civilised imho.

janeybops · 31/10/2004 18:45

Third year in this house and it is like Picadilly Circus here tonight. Had 5 lots already!

As we got egged so much last year coz we didn't answer the door I have felt forced into getting sweets in this year.

IHATE HALLOWEEN - IT IS BEGGING. Don't know any of these kids....
what sort of parents let them do it!!!!?

mieow · 31/10/2004 18:48

I give sweets to the kids, but my kids don't go trick or treating. Had some kids last week knock on the day at 9pm!!! with masks and that, asking for money!! Told them to get lost. I said it wasn't holloween till next week and to come back then, they tried with the "but we're going away and mum said to try and get some money for the holiday" BEGGING in other words.

mieow · 31/10/2004 18:48

knock on the door

misdee · 31/10/2004 18:49

have had 5 lots too. gave some smarties to the lad next door as always chat to him, but told him that was all i had and to share with his sisters.

one lot knocked bloomin loud when i was putting dd2 down to sleep. i hadnt closed the blinds in her room so they could see i was in, but i still didnt answer the door. the later it gets the more i'm worried we're gonna get egged, or someone will damage our car (its a bit rough round here at times).

Blimey, that is a cheek! We only ever give sweeties.

velcrobott · 31/10/2004 18:51

We've had loads already... may run out of sweeties.
DD and DS went out and 1st house was our neighbours and they didn't realise it was our kids (3 and 4) and told them to bugger off ! I was with them, next to them too!
I was brought up on the other side of the Atlantic and use to love trick to treat...

janeybops · 31/10/2004 18:51

Yes the teenagers are going to start arriving soon.
Oh thats another lot DH just answered the door.

janeybops · 31/10/2004 18:53

oh and another lot..

misdee · 31/10/2004 18:54

i'm putting a notice up. otherwise dd1 wont sleep either. its bad enough with the fireworks going off till late.

Would sticking a sign up saying no trick or treaters work for those of you who don't want to answer the door? We have a lot of them (signs) round here and I think it is respected. TBH, I just ignore the doorbell. I don't care that they know we are in. We even have a glass front door!

Lonelymum · 31/10/2004 18:56

Now don't get me started on fireworks! I think they should be banned after 8 o'clock, except perhaps on New Years Eve if people must make a loud noise then.

misdee · 31/10/2004 18:57

we're having fireworks next week, but will be done by 7pm.

Just switched off door bell, although I was at the garage earlier, and saw a gang of yoofs buying eggs. This is despite Herts police has got a campaign going not to sell either eggs or flour to under 16s (I think) around this time.

Kayleigh · 31/10/2004 19:02

We went trick & treating with our boys but only to 5 our 6 houses that we know very well. Have had about 8 lots around so far and ds1 and ds2 have given out mini choc bars. Once my boys are in bed I'm not opening the door to anymore.
Will be shutting our living room curtains tonight !

mieow · 31/10/2004 19:03

deegward, you are right Herts police are supposed to be working with the shops to stop under 16s buying eggs and flour. Dh said that the local Co-op had a sign up saying they will refuse to let them buy eggs and flour.
Where in Herts are you?

Lonelymum · 31/10/2004 19:03

How is it kids can be allowed to throw eggs and flour at people or their personal property and get away with it? I know I sound like Scrooge here, but would I be the only person to phone the police if this happened to me?

misdee · 31/10/2004 19:24

sign didnt work. just been egged!

OP posts:
mieow · 31/10/2004 19:26
