Book Programme on BBC Four and Book Club

Did any of the other 6 people in the UK who have BBC4 watch the Clive Anderson programme last night Before the Booker? They discussed 3 books from 1847 as though they were the Booker shortlist and chose a "winner". Great idea, I thought.
And what's happened to our Book Club?! Are people still reading the books or has it fizzled out?

Didn't see the programme - and haven't had time for September's books (read Regeneration a long time ago and loved it, but couldn't discuss it now!) - but what are the books for October? Also, what about a pre-preChristmas W London meet up again?

Fionn · 03/10/2002 21:04

Willow2 - the next books are:

(Read October - Discuss November)

  1. Bad Blood - Lorna Sage
  2. The Last Time They Met - Anita Shreve
  3. Lost Geography - Charlotte Bacon

I would love to do another west London meet-up. I'm happy just to do a pub this time if anyone else fancies it but a meal is fine too. I suppose this would be after 30 November? I'm flexible, I can get out most nights!

Fionn - November 30th is almost two months away.... and I think we should be allowed out before then! What about hooking up for a drink week after next?

Fionn · 04/10/2002 16:36

Willow2 - sounds great. Having said I can do any time, I can't do Mon-Thurs nights that week as my partner will be away. So, I could do next week (but that sounds like it might not suit you), or Friday 18th or any night except Monday the week after that. Do you want to do a thread asking if ks etc are free, or do you think we should continue this as an email?

would love to meet up - assuming this is a general invite. couldn't make the last sw london meet. will even read whatever book is the nominee for the month. have given up internet based book clubs as writing the comments down is too much like doing an essay, but on for a "live" discussion. drinks/dinner with no literary discussion also fine with me

Fionn · 04/10/2002 17:25

bossykate - yes it's a general invite, would be great to meet you this time! Where do you live? And when can you make it for an evening out?

fionn, that's great! i'm between brixton and clapham - clapham junction area is easiest for me to meet or anywhere accessible by rail from there (this is based on what i remember being the distribution of people from the last time). am flexible on when to meet, as a rule, but can't do thursdays, or fri 11th.

looking forward to meeting you!

Bossykate - So Putney or Richmond would suit you then? I know more places in Richmond but Putney is fine too, depending on how many can come and from where. I understand what you mean about discussing books on line - I suspect others have found the same thing. That sort of discussion is better in a more immediate environment. The idea of talking about the books appeals to me too but I don't want to exclude people who might want a more general chat. Although until we start another thread it's only going to be bookish people reading this anyway!

Friday 18th sounds good - invite open to all. Fionn - we could hit Pizza Express again as that seemed to work well for everyone, or just a nice pub.

Fionn · 04/10/2002 19:24

Bossykate is Friday 18th ok for you? I'll start a thread under Other Subjects for it later today. Willow2 if we go for Pizza Express again we could go to the big one in Richmond - though I suppose it's easier to talk in a smaller place, the Richmond one is usually noisy.

fri 18th would be fine, either putney or richmond would be ok for me. excellent!

Fionn · 05/10/2002 09:47

Bossykate that's great! I've started another thread "West London October meet-up"
