Love tesco chilean merlot, about 4.99 I think or Hardy's one

I was about to suggest Beaujolais. I'm more of a white wine fan myself, but I love Beaujolais. It's light and fruitty, without that tannic heaviness you find in a lot of red wines. The only problem is that it's easy to drink quickly!

And in just a couple of weeks the latest Beaujolais Nouveau comes out - yum, yum, yum. (It's the third Thursday in November.)

Ooh, Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages was my favourite go-with-most red, but I wasn't able to find it here, although I didn't try hard. It's going to be my Thanksgiving wine, now that I know where it is (along with an Alsatian Riesling). Not sure how I missed it before, but that'd be me, missing it when it's in front of my face.

As KatG says, try the Beaujolais Noveau! Very grapey and fun.

A subject close to my heart!

Lindemans Cawarra (the purple one), Jacobs Creek Greneche Shiraz, Hardys Stamps (reddish label), Kumala (the one with the purple label) or Rosemount Estate.

All of these go down pretty easy in our house, they are nice and fruity, particularly the Rosemount Estate, and all cost around the £5 mark.

Banrock Station Shiraz Mataro - think that's what it's called. Usually a bit cheaper than the other branded Aussies (c £4) and v v nice.

Demented · 19/11/2004 23:48

Oh yes, Banrock Station, how did I forget that one!

Rioja Marques de Caceras is a favourite here (and they do a white version which is particularly nice too - bottle of each? )
