Help - I have a bird in my chimney

I've been hearing an odd noise all day - assumed it was the dogs playing outside, but having been sat in here for the last hour I've realised it's coming from the fireplace. We have one of those hearths with a metal door that blocks the chimney hole when not in use (and this fireplace is never used) and I've just tried to lift it up and felt/heard that there is something on the other side - almost definately a bird - I can hear scrabbling of feet and flapping of wings. WTF do I do? Dh isn't back until midnight, and will probably be a little drunk, and would probably be no help at all anyway (wonderful man, but hardly handy and I have to handle my own spiders so he'd be no help with a bird.

Oh, If you don't want to deal with it your self. I have a thing about birds.

Call the RSPCA or RSPCB they will probably come out tommorow morning and rescue said bird!

Hope that helps

we get them alot (not to self - MUST cap the chimney). Doesn't help now but we open the patio door, shut the front window curtain, knock out the bit of wood that blocks up the bottom of the chimney - and hope the bloody bird flies in the right direction! I wouldn't let it out at night when it wouldn't have the light to fly towards.

There is no way I am even trying to deal with it myslef. Have just called RSPCA and they are goig to send someone round tomorrow to get it out - the man was very nice about my uselessness.

I had no idea the RSPB/RSPCA would come out, I said we do the above - what I actually meant was I wait for dh to come home and he does the above. I really don't like birds close up.
