Anyone want to call Cork people gentle? When a Corkman smiles at you check for the knife in your back! (Purple snack bars on sale in pubs is a plus).

sKerryMum, he said it with a big, friendly, I-make-commission smile. Soon changed to a slightly pissed off look as the Americans started asking if there was something funny about "Top of the morning".

Kerry, I agree! But I suppose it helps that we don't have a good word to say about each other either!

Georgeous - I'm in Co.Wicklow.

I'm from Mount Merrion in Dublin originally and lived in Ranelagh when first married.

Moved to Wicklow about 8 years ago and love it.

expatinscotland · 25/10/2007 23:55

God, I HATE this new format.

I've no patience for it.

Methinks my time here will become much limited and in December, once my folks are here, none at all.

I've got FA patience with this.

Expat, you can change it back! Just click on customise settings on the top, and change back to Mumsnet Classic.

KM, my grandmother always referred to a cottage near hers as "the Yank's cottage" - think they were Irish people who had lived in the US for a long time and returned to Ireland when they retired.... the funny thing was, my grandfather had also lived in the US for a long time but I don't think she considered him to be a Yank!

BTW sKerry, it's not just me. I remember now that in Limerick, Kerry people have the reputation of being very gentle. But this is Limerick after all - anyone would seem gentle compared to the scumbags in Limerick! (apologies Limerick folk, I count myself as one of you!!)

Didn't hear about that one, but there are plenty of horror stories from Limerick. Having said that, I spent all my teenage years there and had a great time, never once felt threatened, none of my friends had any trouble either. I think basically, as long as you're not connected to one one of the feuding families you're fine.

Georgeous · 26/10/2007 12:05

Like everywhere in Ireland it's changed a lot though. When I was growing up there was a little old man who had a shop weaving baskets and wicker chairs. He used to sit on the floor on all this straw weaving stuff. This was the 90's!

Oh my God. When did this happen? There was always someone being shot, run over, stabbed etc., but I never heard of anything quite that evil. It doesn't bear thinking about.

Now this is just like an Irish thread - pretty soon we'll all be saying "yeah, I know that pub, I went school with that guy!" It's still such a small country.......

Sauerkraut - I went to a convent school in Killiney, many, many moons ago.

Georgeous · 27/10/2007 08:24

Tnogu, I have never been to Wicklow but it sounds wonderful

TnOgu · 27/10/2007 08:27

Good morning

Co.Wicklow is lovely.

Lots of hills, lakes and some beautiful woodland.

It's known as The garden of Ireland.

Where abouts in Ireland do you hail from?

Hello Watling, how you doing?

Georgeous · 27/10/2007 08:35

Morning

My family are all from Limerick. I grew up in Galway, Limerick and Co.Clare. Bit of a nomad!

I will have to visit Wicklow one day.
