Mice in my walls! Help!

Think we have mice in our walls, our house is a semi, only 4 years old, but we can hear scurrying about and scratching at the walls. Any ideas on what we should do? Is it best just to ring council straight away or should Dp pull out a socket and put poison down? Not sure this is a great idea, but really unsure as to what to do.

Put some poison in your attic and get some traps put down in places away from your kids or pets if you have them. Get one of them plug in rodent repeller. If you have mice in the house you need to do something as they breed like rabbits! The best answer is maybe to get a cat? But first of all get the poison and traps out and exterminate the little beasts!

Dont tart taking out sockets. mice can squeeze through holes the thickness of a pencil so they are probably scurrying round your floors at night looking for food anyway. I dont mean to scare you but i doubt they are just in the walls.

2mum thanks for the advice! Don't worry we haven't taken sockets out have spoken to pest control and they are coming round to put traps out /whatever they do.
Funnily enough, haven't heard anything for last night or so.. but better to be safe than sorry. Am going up in loft tomorrow to check it out.

Pest control will put poison down but you need to stop them getting into your walls in the first place. Have a look outside as the ventilation bricks are often where they get in. Unless the holes in the bricks are tiny, put some wire mesh over the top (can be glued over).

Also, there are two types of plug in. There is the sonic variety which makes a v high pitched noise which puts them off. Trouble is, the sound waves can't pass through furniture or anything else that may be in the way so they tend not to be too effective. Plus the mice get used to them.

There is a better option though which is a plug in that affects all of the wiring in your house (and hence your walls) and messes with their nervous systems. You can get this from Homebase or somesuch. this sort of thing.

Finally, and this is straightfoward but not easy when you have kids - simply don't leave anything out for them to eat, inc crumbs etc.

Nice little boxes and releasing them are all very well if you are happy to keep doing that but if you want to be rid of them (and remember that they wee and poo everywhere) you have to take serious measures!!!

We have waged a six month battle with them and have been driven half mad in the process. Hope you get a good result!!!

Excellent advice there, thanks very much! Will order one of those plugs tonight.
