A seller is charging to examine a product returned as faulty

I sent a product back to the manufacturer after a couple of weeks because I think it’s faulty. They disagreed, and said they would have it inspected with an 8 week wait. I demurred and asked for a refund. They have refused and now say that they have incurred costs and I can’t have it back till I’ve paid. I’m prepared to talk about faulty/not faulty but I am sure that I shouldn’t have to pay. I have gone over the consumer rights act but I can’t find a reference to this situation. Any advice ?
