Southampton Neighbourhoods, Bassett?

Hi there, moving to Southampton in the next few weeks with other half who'll be working at the uni hospital and keen to get any views if Bassett is a good neighbourhood to buy in? We've heard some roads are such as 'The Crescents' but others a bit less so. The area around Pointout Road was for example described as a bit of a 'benefits street' due to high numbers of social support renters as well as quite a lot of students. We're very much in favour of a mixed diverse community especially across economic bands and so on, so interested in any opinions including other areas within reasonable commuting range of the hospital. Thanks for any opinions, S :-)

When you say commuting to the hospital, is that walking, cycling, etc? Driving east- west in Southampton during rush hour isn’t much fun, although easier now lots of folk are working at home.

Yes Bassett is one of the nicer areas of Southampton. The area between Shirley and the Common (Hill Lane) is also ok. Probably known as Upper a Shirley but I get a bit confused as to the different areas.

Schools in Southampton, particularly secondary are a mixed bag, and lots of families move out of the city before their children reach secondary age.

Highfield is “naice” but dominated by the University. Portswood and Shirley both have high streets but which have massively suffered during the last 10 years and charity shop heavy.

Bassett or Chilworth are probably the best parts of inner Southampton, the outskirts have some lovely villages in the new forest.

Thank you for the quick and helpful replies, really good to learn more. The commute would most likely be by bike and I think there are some new bike lanes opening up in the area which should make things better.

Several of the new bike lanes have already been removed :-( Do you have children? Bassett is lovely but Bassett Green Primary is not.
