How much should we pay babysitter please?

We never have babysitters. Not only do we hardly ever go out, we can't leave DS (age 7, various SN, v.high maintenance) with many people. Those people will be out with us as it's DS1 and DD's swimming club championships presentation night. Usually take DS to this each year but he ruins it with his behaviour and he's even worse these days so couldn't face it. It's DS1's and DD's night really and it will be lovely to be able to concentrate on just them.

So gave it some thought and remembered one of the helpers who has since left, from DS2's SN club he attends, wrote me a note when she left with her mob and home nos, offering to have DS2 (and DD as necessary) any time we needed a babysitter and saying how she'd miss working with him.

So I text her and she said yes straight away. She is a university student (left the club to concentrate on her studies) and in her late teens or maybe v. early twenties I think. She is fab with DS. She will arrive about 6, have to put DS to bed (he will be ready; have had medicines etc) and then bascially just sit downstairs until we get back about 11. She may have to settle him if he wakes but he doesn't usually start his night time waking routine until after midnight.

How much should we pay her please? We have no clue whatsoever. And we live in Kent.. so not London rates hopefully! (And are not at all wealthy.. quite the oppostite! In case that's relevant!)

I would say about £20-25 or just ask her outright what she charges.

I suspected similar. Cripes I used to get £3 for babysitting 3 children under 5!!!!

She is so sweet, nice and unassuming that I doubt she would tell me how much she may usually get.. and I don't want to short change her.

Our babysitter charges 5 pounds per hour, so similar. If we're late etc I usually give her bit extra. Fortunately she drives so don't pay taxi home, which could make going out even more expensive!

25? Thats what i used to get.

How long ago SantasMissy??!

I would guess that the standard babysitting rate in your area is £6 - £7 an hour. You might start by finding out what your local sitters charge?

I'd get a ballpark figure, then ask her what she charges.

Good luck.

We are in Cumbria, so perhaps rates are different, the girl we use is 18, DD's are 2 and 4. She tends to arrive at about 7.30 and we usually give her about £3.00 per hour, but not to the penny, so if she's been there 3 hours, we give her £10 as opposed to £9. Its usually, £10, £12 or £15 if we've inconvenienced her until after midnight. I'm sure theres somewhere you can ring who gives you an idea of the price per hour for your area. I did it for our area but I can't for the life of me remember who it was.

Suggest an ammount that's affordable for you, and see if she agrees. Then, sweeten the deal by getting her a box of chocolates or similar.

ShinyHappyPurpleSeveredHeads · 15/10/2007 21:36

Good idea Ore. I was thinking of offering her £20. We really don't have much money to spare.

Sounds good to me

I think honesty is best policy here. Ask her by text how much she charges then you know where you stand.
