well I had chicken pox as a child but still got shingles when I was 20 ish. So i don't think so - not sure when its contagious though - have a google

Whizzz · 13/10/2007 17:25

you can only get shingles actually, if you have had chicken pox

3sEnough · 13/10/2007 17:26

Yes - you should be. Shingles sufferers can pass on the CP virus to those who haven't had it (it doesn't go the other way though - you can't give a person shingles if they are with a lo with CP)

thanks whizz

I believe its from the same virus that causes chicken pox. Once you've had chicken pox, the virus remains in your body and can become reactivated to cause shingles. see here Not sure if this answers your question though!

Sorry - should have said that you have as much chance of catching CP from this person as you would from a CP child - and exactly NO chance of 'catching' shingles as you can't catch it, only develop it from the dormant CP virus in your body.

sorry cross posted!
