Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

The retro corner. Sounds good.

Sounds like a plan Distant. When we're turfing stuff out, we can donate to the BC instead. I'm sure gcat will have some stuff in all those boxes she keeps emptying. Wink

DistantShores1 · 20/10/2020 16:56

@TracysShoulder

I'm the tissue culprit here. I forget if I've pushed one up my sleeve.

I'm another one with no soul but there's just something about the atmosphere in a church or cathedral that is like no other building, same with temples in Far East.

I love looking round inside old churches too. There is a special kind of atmosphere. The silence and knowing generations of people have trodden in your footsteps. All long gone to their graves.

I especially enjoyed visiting Pompeii

In my dreams I would have loved to be an archaeologist.
Old things just fascinate me.

blossomsinmay · 20/10/2020 17:08

I've always checked DH's pockets for stray tissues before putting his clothes in the wash. I moaned at him for years about it.

He finally cottoned on. Mainly because I was keeping the tenners he used to leave in his back pocket. Grin

BakedCam · 20/10/2020 17:16

Boris stood by his words. Fair play.

LilyLangtrey · 20/10/2020 17:21

Pompeii, Distant...ooh, we could have a right good chat about that.

MrL and I spent the day there when we were in Amalfi and there was a woman on our trip whose mother rang her to tell her what was happening on Corrie. Deirdre had left Ken - that's how long ago it was. So we were all stood round, about 20 Brits, while she gave us the details line by line. We were engrossed and when she had finished and we looked up, our tour guide and the rest of them had long gone and we couldn't find them.

So we went and sat in a cafe by the entrance where we thought the tour bus would find us and we carried on chatting, all 20 of us. Eventually, the bus did find us and we all trooped on while everyone else tutted at us for holding them up. It was like doing the walk of shame.

It was worth it, though. She did a great impersonation of Deirdre, throaty voice, imaginary fag in hand, pushing up her imaginary glasses.

You could tell me about all the bits of Pompeii I'd missed Grin

😂😂😂 Lily.
Pompeii upstaged by Ken and Deirdre Baa low.

We have been twice on a day trip from Sorrento.
The second time we had my DMIL with us. It was a scorching hot day and DMIL, who had COPD was really struggling, but she was determined to keep up and enjoy the trip. Which she did.
No Corrie updates I'm afraid.

It's a place I'd like to go back to one day.

The walk of shame I've done too.
Me and my sister nearly missed our flight to Majorca about 17 years ago. We didn't know it was a silent airport and next thing our names were announced saying the flight was about to leave.
We scurried up the aisle apologising to all the passengers on the way Blush

LilyLangtrey · 20/10/2020 17:58

Distant 😂🤣😂

And doesn't the walk of shame go on forever? Every minute an eternity 😆

Evening Clunkers. Enjoyed OTD and Tracy's tasty offerings. The talk of decluttering upthread is striking a chord. Can't remember if I've mentioned it here but I'm helping my DM declutter in preparation for moving from 4-bed house to 1-bed flat. The sheer volume of stuff is so overwhelming that I've started decluttering myself as I don't want to end up with that many possessions Wink

LilyLangtrey · 20/10/2020 18:15

Dear me, Lake, that's a job and a half. Have you worked out how you are going to manage it?

Is your DM happy to be getting rid of things? It is even harder when you want to keep it all but don't have the room for it.
DorisLessingsLesson · 20/10/2020 18:30

We were supposed to be taking DS to Pompeii this year. DH and I went before DS was born and have always said we'd go back.

I love old churches and cathedrals. DS has inherited that love of historic buildings and museums but DH worries he'll be bored so tends to offer distractions or treats bribes DS always whispers to me 'I actually like doing this mum, but don't tell dad!' Grin

lakeswimmer · 20/10/2020 18:31

Lily, DSis and I have been making regular visits over the last three months and sit with DM going through things and deciding what to keep and what to get rid of.

One of the biggest challenges has been getting rid of the things she doesn't want. In DM's area the charity shops will only take donated items if you book a slot and we're not always organised enough for that. On most visits we just pile stuff up in our own cars and try and get rid of them once we get home. I've currently got a boot full of DM's clothes and random household items! I must confess some of them are mine - on the last visit I found four boxes of teenage books, letters and other treasures Grin

lakeswimmer · 20/10/2020 19:39

Meercat23 A lot of the time DM had forgotten she had the thing and so isn't bothered or claims never to have seen it before Grin The most important pieces of furniture, 100 years worth of family photos and her beloved books will go with her.

On the last visit some of the furniture she won't have room for was taken away by a charity and she was a bit upset but a lot of heirloom type things are being scattered among her children and grandchildren and she's happy they've got new homes with family members. TBH a lot of it was decades worth of paperwork which just needed shredding.

TeflonTits · 20/10/2020 19:43

Just checking in to say hi.

LilyLangtrey · 20/10/2020 19:45

Just popping in to say thank you, everyone, for making me laugh so much today and for keeping me up-to-date with the news. It has been a very testing day, one way or another, and there is something I am going to have to sleep on - it will be a fresh day tomorrow. But you have kept my spirits up, just as I knew you would.

I'm going to say goodnight early now - I am cream crackered - so you won't hear a peep out of me again tonight. Sleep well. I will talk to you tomorrow. All is well.

Lakes, are all the photos labelled with names, dates and places? If not, it might be an opportunity to get that done as far as you can, and to get them scanned so you've got copies, and other family members can access them.

meercat23 · 20/10/2020 19:51

Night Lily. Sleep well.

lakeswimmer · 20/10/2020 20:00

G night Lily.

MissSarahThane we do need to get on top of the photos while DM remembers who people are. Sadly for some of them, that ship has sailed - lots came from DF's side of the family and he died many years ago. We've found ourselves looking at them and going "Who was Geoff?" Geoff was in lots of photo that were labelled but we don't know who he is Sad On the last visit I commented that someone might be looking at a photo of me in 2120 and wondering who the hell I am...

Gramgram · 20/10/2020 20:10

Hello, had a tough day yesterday as we were walking in the sports field, two yobs on a motorbike deliberately rode at us, and kicked out as they brushed past. Then got off their bike and threw bottles at us. We did call the Police but just got given a crime number.

Didn't sleep well and have been quite shaky today. However we have decided that we will move in the next year.

Take care everyone.

StormzyinaTCup · 20/10/2020 20:31

Just dropping in with a quick 👋👋 .

GramGram - 💐 that’s disgraceful behaviour and what a shock for you, no wonder you are a bit shaky. Take care.

DistantShores1 · 20/10/2020 20:31

Goodnight Lily. I hope a good nights sleep will help with you coming to a decision.

Oh Gramgram, so sorry to hear. That's a terrible thing to happen. Very frightening for you.
I'm glad there was no one badly hurt.
I'm sure you will give going back there a miss.
Take care.

TracysShoulder · 20/10/2020 21:13

That is shocking Gramgram. I'm sure you must have replayed the incident many times in your head since it happened. What is wrong with people?! I hope it doesn't make you too nervous to go out. Flowers

Hope you get some sleep Lily.
