Good evening, Clunkers!

Welcome to the Breakfast Club where the kettle is permanently on, the drinks flow and the snacks are both self-replenishing and calorie-free.

We start each day with a look at history and a tribute to a brave or inspiring woman. Mostly though, we just chat randomly about current affairs, recipes, life in lockdown, literature, music and anything else that comes into our heads.

Veteran Clunkers welcome. Anyone else who wants to join in the chat - sense of humour essential! - welcome.

Kettle's on ☕️☕️☕️

@AnneKipanki

Afternoon.

Out of sorts today. There is a lot to catch up on here .

Yes a lot to catch up on, I cannot believe we are already up to 11, we sure like to chat. 😁

Hope you are ok, saying you feel out of sorts, Lily’s large glass will sort you out, after drinking all of that you will be rendered unconscious and sleep it off. 😁🍷

Nelllyyy · 21/10/2020 15:21

Grhh should read 11 pages* 🥴

AnneKipanki · 21/10/2020 15:27

Ooh that is a huge glass. Holding it to my forehead would be better than drinking it .
Thanks very much Lily and Nelllyyy.

AnneKipanki · 21/10/2020 15:29

I love the Nelly Coffee @TracysShoulder 👍🏻

AnneKipanki · 21/10/2020 15:36

Thanks for the OTD!
Nice comment about Florence and Mandy.

AnneKipanki · 21/10/2020 15:37

An edit function would be good.
Tragic events too , Aberfan and Clarkston .

LilyLangtrey · 21/10/2020 15:43

I learn a lot by doing these OTDs. They don't have the same impact when you are a child.

Does anyone remember the first moon landing? I was allowed to stay up all night to watch it on TV (while everyone was asleep in bed) because Dad said it was history in the making and that way, I would always remember it.

I sat there with my hot chocolate (not UK time zone then), wrapped up in a fleecy blanket, all agog at the wonder of it.

MoreHippoThanPenguin · 21/10/2020 16:01

Oh, Lily I love that story about watching the moon landing with hot chocolate and a blanket.

DorisLessing, I bet the band had a lot of fun Grin.

DistantShores, we are fortunately past the recorder phase. That is the thing we stroke lucky on. Little Hippo already played the recorder (grade 1) when they introduced it just before lockdown Grin This is what they did; They bought a recorder for every child in the year group and sent them home just before lockdown and told them to practice. That is when I realised that some parents really must have annoyed the teachers.

LittleBoyHippo is just having a zoom violin lesson 😱. Tracy, I might just have one of those drinks, Anne, mind if I join you in a quiet corner somewhere?

AnneKipanki · 21/10/2020 16:07

Yes .
I remember it too . I am not sure if it was live but I remember being at my Grandparents ' house, and the whole family watching it .

TracysShoulder · 21/10/2020 16:25

Oh, no, the violin. Of all the instruments from school, that is one I was glad DDs had no talent for.

I see Lily has opened up the bar not that it ever closes so in keeping with today's theme, I've arranged for Appletinis accompanied by a delicious apple cake to see us through to dinner.

Hope you feel better with that novelty ice pack Anne. Come and sit in our retro corner that you helped to create. It might be the only way you'll see your bedroom wallpaper up on a wall. Grin

Nelly, I'm only on page 3 Wink

Lily, I stayed up all night with my Mum to watch the moon landing. Very exciting.

Agree with the Aberfan disaster being very well done on The Crown. We finished with Netflix in the summer because we got Apple TV free for a year, but may have to get it again for the new series.

I don't remember seeing the moon landings.

😬 Hippo. Pay back time for the teachers.
Here's what I remember about learning the recorder. We didn't start to 1st year in secondary school. The teacher would bring 30+ recorders out from the music cupboard, dip the top in watery dettol and hand them out round the class. They were collected and put back at the end of the lesson 🤮
We had to perform a song in school assembly. I was so nervous my breath was shaking and I was just making screeching sounds.
In the end I put my tongue over the blower and mimed.
I sounded so much better after that 😬

Nelllyyy · 21/10/2020 16:49

@TracysShoulder, that cake looks like heaven. 😍😍

Nelllyyy · 21/10/2020 16:51

@TracysShoulder... page 3😂😂😂 😁

TracysShoulder · 21/10/2020 17:05

Yes, page 3 because I have my settings at 100 posts to view. I get so lost when trying to respond to posts 3 pages back and end up forgetting or scurrying back and forth, then losing my reply somehow Confused

TracysShoulder · 21/10/2020 17:08

Is that rice pudding in the oven Nelly? I might have to make one for the weekend, in fact you could just send me your meal plan as I seem to be following your suggestions except avocado.

TheFleegleHasLanded · 21/10/2020 17:10

I remember it clearly Lily because my youngest brother had recently been born, and mum was 'lying in' so dad was in charge of feeding my other brother and I.

He bought some dodgy fish fingers from the corner shop and brother and I got food poisoning and swelled up like little Michelin men!

Fun times Grin

Creaky black and white telly with a fuzzy picture, but we were mesmerised.

TeflonTits · 21/10/2020 17:15

I normally get cravendale milk when I get an asda shop, however the local co-op doesnt stock it - but they think absolutely nothing of giving over 2 aisles to crap like TV's and Duvets and the like, in a small town of 4000 people. Pretty sure that the Co-Op would be the last place I would buy a TV from.

I hate shopping in the Co-Op in general but sometimes its needs must when I unexpectedly run out of things, plus it gets me out the house.

Very sad to see that Jill Paton Walsh has died. She gave me many hours of reading pleasure with her continuation of the DL Sayers Wimsey novels. Knowledge of Angels is a brilliant book as well, and I enjoyed her Imogen Quy books too.

LilyLangtrey · 21/10/2020 17:46

Didn't know about Jill Paton Walsh, Gcat - that is sad.

Lovely wallpaper, Anne. We will definitely put it up in the new Retro Room.

Tracy - that cake looks gert lush, as they say round here. Please save me a slice for later. Shepherds pie tonight. MrL is delighted. It's not his favourite.

I thought you meant page 3...of The Sun Newspaper. 🤦🏼‍♀️🥴😁

That is sad.

I loved listening to the DL Sayers Wimsey series on Radio 4 extra, it was after this that I read her books.

@LilyLangtrey, I love Shepherds pie.

LilyLangtrey · 21/10/2020 18:12

Angela Rayner called Chris Clarkson, Conservative MP, scum in the HoC?

She got a right telling off from Dame Eleanor, and quite right too. That is a major breach of Commons behaviour. It adds nothing of value to the debate and it just makes those of us at home despair to see our elected representatives behave in this way.

Anne, I think gcat has some china that will match with your paper. It would make an elegant backdrop to our extraordinary women gallery.

TracysShoulder · 21/10/2020 18:19

Nelly! Grin

Shock Lily, I just saw that on the news. Doesn't surprise me at all.
Today, I've been thinking that our country has truly lost its way Sad
