I have just got out of the bath and heard my front door open and close. I thought it must be ds home from school for some reason. I went downstairs and a parcel I had ordered was laying in my hallway. We don't have a porch. The delivery man must have not got an answer when he knocked so tried the front door. I'm quite gobsmacked really. Me and dh could have been having a sh** in the kitchen for all he knew! Would you also be angry??

We often leave our doors unlocked even when we're out

Reminds me of something I saw on the local news recently. I can't even remember what the news item was about.
There was a lady being interviewed. She was standing on her doorstep, with her house number clearly visible beside her, and a caption at the bottom of the screen saying "resident of ** Street" and she was saying "Och Aye this is such a friendly neighbourhood. We never need to lock our doors..." etc. I can just imagine every criminal minded person in the whole area making a mental note to pay her a visit

Hulababy · 20/10/2004 20:27

I would be angry with myself for leaving the door unlicked; not at the delivery man - who probably thought he was doing you a favour.

Recently in a local area there has been a huge spate of people having their cars stolen, simply by opeing people's doors and taking the keys off the side. I never leave a door unlocked if I can help it.

AlbertaBlue · 20/10/2004 20:28

...if me and dh were having sh** in the kitchen, I would not be overly vexed about the parcel!!!

bonniej · 20/10/2004 21:04

I was going to ring and complain but dh agrees with others on here who have said the delivery man was doing me a favour. TBH I'm quite pleased I got my parcel without any hassle, but I still do think it's not the right thing to do. I know I shouldn't have left the door unlocked but he shouldn't have just let himself in, even if it was just to drop the parcel. He could have left it with a neighbour. I leave the door unlocked when I'm in during the day as I always have done and never really thought anything of it. I'm not as security concious as I should be and am working on it. I will lock ALL doors at ALL times in future.

bloody hell where do you live that you leave the door open???

Tommy · 20/10/2004 21:14

I found a parcel on my door mat once and the only way the delivery guy could have got it there was to put it through the cat flap - over £100 worth of clothes - I wasn't too chuffed. I keep my front door locked with the chubb as DS1 can open it now with just the yale. Back door is always open though

bonniej · 20/10/2004 21:19

I'm getting a real telling off now I don't live in a friendly place with no crime... I live in Blackpool. Not a great place to leave your door unlocked I know. I think I must have been lucky up till now. I must add I always lock at night and if I'm going out I just always feel sort of safe during the day (until the dreaded delivery man) I will promise to keep locked at all times in the future. I know I have been very silly

My door is mostly left unlocked if my little girl is playing out. I'd be up and down like a jack-in-the-box otherwise

linnet · 20/10/2004 23:29

When I'm in our flat the front door isn't locked. We live in a small cul de sac and the door opens right onto the street so it's visible to all the neighbours, it's not up a close or hidden by trees or anything. If I'm going out the back to hang out washing, we don't have a back door, I lock the door and I lock it when I'm going out into town or whatever. I've never had a problem and we've always left our door unlocked if we're in the house. It's a tiny flat anyway and no matter where you are you hear the front door opening.

I've had parcels delivered where the delivery man rings the bell then opens the door and places it just inside, he doesn't actually come into the house. Never had a problem with that, but most deliveries I get are sent to my granny's house as she's always in so it doesn't happen often.

I notice you said that you might complain about the delivery man, but I think that's a tad harsh because bless you, you are 50% culpable for leaving the door open....

You are not really getting a right old telling off from everyone, people are just concerned for your personal safety so I will add to the well meaning chorus of lock your doors! Although I think you well and truly have taken that on board now, eh ?
