I have just got out of the bath and heard my front door open and close. I thought it must be ds home from school for some reason. I went downstairs and a parcel I had ordered was laying in my hallway. We don't have a porch. The delivery man must have not got an answer when he knocked so tried the front door. I'm quite gobsmacked really. Me and dh could have been having a sh** in the kitchen for all he knew! Would you also be angry??

I can't believe you don't lock your front door!!!

bonniej · 20/10/2004 12:03

I hadn't thought of the back door either. I'm going to lock it now.

At least it's somthing like this that has made you realise you need to lock your doors rather than someone apearing in the bathroom while you were in the shower!!!!

bonniej · 20/10/2004 12:05

that's a really scary thought woodpops, for me and him!

Please lock your door from now on.

My midwife often used to try and walk into our house but the door was alwasy locked. She used to get quite miffed that she couldn't get in. At the end of the day who is she to just walk into our home??

jampot · 20/10/2004 12:16

it was posted first class

I think I'm bit more aware of what could happen etc as my dad used to be a police man so I've grown up with it. Also I'm a big scardy cat. I can't watch crimewatch as it puts the fear of god in me!!!!

bonniej · 20/10/2004 12:19

It's ok jampot, the post up here is a joke. things can take up to a week even if it's first class. I'm sure it will be here soon

I promise I will lock both doors at all times from now on. My FIL has a habit of just letting himself in as well. I know he's family but it is a bit annoying. All my dh family do it. It'll be worth locking just to stop them

bonniej - maybe the delivery man thought there was a porch he could leave the parcel in? Then when he opened the door and found the hall, thought he might as well leave it. Maybe he thought you left it unlocked for that very reason.

I always lock my front door (Yale) and mostly have my porch locked too. Occasionally when I haven't, I have found a parcel in the porch.

sammyg · 20/10/2004 12:58

My postie leaves small parcels under the outside door mat so we only find them by chance and might squash something breakable!

Furball · 20/10/2004 12:58

Woodpops - can't believe your MW! What a cheek!

Tinker · 20/10/2004 14:17

What a thoughtful delivery man. I'd have been very pleased myself

zebra · 20/10/2004 14:20

Agree with Tinker.

WigWamBam · 20/10/2004 14:23

I can't see anything thoughtful about thinking you have the right to walk into a complete stranger's home uninvited.

donnie · 20/10/2004 14:24

I actually think it was nice of him to leave it and save you the hassle of collecting it or it getting wet/nicked from the doorstep! I am surprised you leave your door unlocked though - I'd NEVER do that! why not leave a note on the door telling delivery people what you want them to do?

donnie · 20/10/2004 14:25

but it's not like he went in and made himself a coffee etc, he just opened the door and put the parcel on the floor then left.

WigWamBam · 20/10/2004 14:27

I just don't feel he even had the right to try the door, that's all. If someone can't get to the door or doesn't want to answer it, most reasonable callers would just walk away!

Caligula · 20/10/2004 14:38

I'm inclined to agree with donnie. He hasn't done any harm, and you left your front door unlocked. Maybe it's just because I've always been brought up in the city, but I would never ever leave either front or back doors unlocked. Even if I go upstairs to the loo, I check that the doors are locked. When I'm alone in the house and upstairs in my office, I have my alarm on. (Am I paranoid?!) You must live somewhere where it's normal to leave your front door unlocked do you? In which case, it's probably fairly normalish for a postman to try the door and leave the parcel. He was probably thinking he was being helpful.

clairabelle · 20/10/2004 14:43

I'd be furious I complained in the summer because postie chucked a parcel through my lounge window. I really felt upset by it. No one has the right to enter your home uninvited I would have to complain.

spacemonkey · 20/10/2004 14:44

I would be pleased that I didn't have the hassle of collecting the parcel from the PO. It would remind me to keep the door locked in future though!

Tinker · 20/10/2004 14:45

But he wasn't walking in. He just checked the handle and put the parcel inside. Lovely. I'd like to nominate him as Delivery Man of the Year
