I have just got out of the bath and heard my front door open and close. I thought it must be ds home from school for some reason. I went downstairs and a parcel I had ordered was laying in my hallway. We don't have a porch. The delivery man must have not got an answer when he knocked so tried the front door. I'm quite gobsmacked really. Me and dh could have been having a sh** in the kitchen for all he knew! Would you also be angry??

this happens to us all the time (parcel door thing not the kitchen thing ), which is why i put a yale lock on our front door, means we now miss more parcels but i fell safer.

Avalon · 20/10/2004 10:53

No, I'd have frightened myself by leaving the front door unlocked.

miam · 20/10/2004 10:54

More unnerved than anything else actually. He probably thought he was just being helpful I suppose, but it is rather alarming.

coppertop · 20/10/2004 10:54

Tbh I think he probably did you a favour. If he hadn't put the parcel inside it would either have been left outside (to get drenched or stolen) or would have gone back to the depot. It couldn't have been nice knowing that someone had opened your door though.

bonniej · 20/10/2004 10:55

it's never happened to me before. I don't really think it's in their best interests to do this really. What if someone claims something has gone missing when the delivery man just let himself in? I'll makesure I keep the door locked in future. (btw me and dh haven't had a sh** in the kitchen since we were 18 )

I'd never leave my front door unlocked - you need a Yale key to open it

popsycal · 20/10/2004 10:56

i always lock the door if i am in alone - espcially if i am upstairs

i know of people who have had things pinched when they left the door open and were in the house

JanH · 20/10/2004 10:57

Round here they always do this. I lock the door when I'm in the bath! Mind you we do have a porch (well, a vestibule). I guess a) they think you would rather have it than trail off to pick it up or ring to rearrange and b) they prefer to deliver as much as poss.

bonniej · 20/10/2004 10:58

I generally leave it unlocked during the day as ds comes home from school for lunch etc. and it's just easier if he lets himself in without knocking (dd usually in bed). I've given him countless keys which he has lost. I've never been concerned about leaving it unlocked when I'm in during the day but this has given me a bit of a wake up call.

OMG - I'd never leave my front door unlocked, ever! I suppose if you are used to it but my Dad is a policeman and I'm pretty sure he'd tell me not too!

In fact, their next door neighbour got burgled the other day because her back door was unlocked and she was only in the garden [fear emotion]

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:01

You lot have scared the life out of me I truly never really thought anything of it when I'm in and it's daytime. I will certainly keep it locked at all times from now on. Maybe the delivery man has done me a favour.

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 20/10/2004 11:04

I'm appalled that he even thought about trying the door in the first place, to be quite honest, and I would complain. If someone doesn't answer the door, no-one has the right to try and get in!

Skate · 20/10/2004 11:05

WWB is right - even if he did sort of do you a favour, I'd complain and say I'd rather he'd left a card for you to go and pick it up. What he did is actually trespassing and I'd be quite spooked by it.

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:05

That's what I thought WigWamBam, but it seems to be quite commonplace. He won't be getting through my front door again without an invite, that's for sure

OP posts:
Angeliz · 20/10/2004 11:07

I'd be very angry!!

DD often stays down watching t.v while i take washing and stuff up and she'd absolutely freeze if a strange man popped in! (Mind you he'd have a job here as is like a fort!!!)

WigWamBam · 20/10/2004 11:09

I don't think the fact that it's commonplace makes it right. You have the right to chose who you open your door to, and you also have the right to your privacy. You had just got out of the bath - if that had happened in my house the delivery man would have got an eyeful! I really don't think that anyone, no matter what their excuse, has the right to simply open your door and let themself in.

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:09

I just feel really silly for leaving my door open now

OP posts:
bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:10

You're right WWB. I'm going to ring and complain. I just feel as if I've put dd's safety at risk by leaving the door open.

OP posts:
woodpops · 20/10/2004 11:26

OMG. Why don't you leave the door locked?? My door is always locked. THere are so many opertunist thieves that try front doors and pinch car keys or handbags that are just lying in the hall. I don't mean to scare you.

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:29

I will never do it again, ever I think I can be quite naive (or some would say stupid) and don't think of what could happen.

OP posts:
Angeliz · 20/10/2004 11:31

bonniej, don't strt blaming yourself, just see it as a warning and he was probably an innocent old guy who is used to doing things like that from bygone days! (I really beleive that too as if it had been a young guy he'd have known the implications!)

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:33

thanks Angeliz. It has definately taught me a lesson though.

OP posts:
jampot · 20/10/2004 11:55

Bonniej, was the parcel small?

bonniej · 20/10/2004 11:59

no jampot, it wasn't the perfume It was a jacket that was flat in a box.

OP posts:
JoolsToo · 20/10/2004 12:00

I always keep the front AND back door locked!
