New Mattress vs. Old Mattress

Just wanted to find out people's opinion about cot mattresses and whether it's okay to use them with the second time around. My 20 mo. old son is still in his cot and I'm planning on moving him out of it in the coming months to make way for his now 10 wk. old brother. Should I buy a new mattress or is it okay to use the same mattress?

Current thinking is that it's perfectly OK to re-use a mattress with a second child. We chucked ours but there is a four year gap between my children and it had been in the loft and smelled musty. As yours is still in use it will be fine!

Agree with marthamoo- if mattress is clean then it's ok... i think that's what it says in mothercare catalogue as well now

we've just reused ours with a similar gap - ds 1 was hardly ever sick on it and was still in nappies when he moved to his big bed so it seemed pretty clean to us

Most mattresses now come with a plastic covering which prevents liquids from getting into the core of the mattress, I guess if yours has that plastic cover it shouldn't be a problem, now, if it doesn't... even if it's clean consider that even little babies sweat so it may not be as clean as you think. (considering that a regular adult mattres takes about 7 litres of sweat in less than a year... just make the calculation...)

You know what, just go with your gutt instincts on this...your ds is fine using it now..I think it'll be fine to use the same one.

For us, ds never slept in his cot and the foam mattress the cot came with was brand new. BUT, DH was paranoid and when expecting dd, DH went out and purchased a costly sprung one (£90+) and dd slept in it from day 1 to her first b-day. DH claims had we forked out the £££ initially, maybe DS would have slept there rather than in between us!
