Keep your filthy disgusting cats at home!

My 3yo son just ran across my front lawn and jumped in the car. On the way, he's trodden in cat poo ( there's a regular offender, and no, it's not fox ). There's now cat poo all across the back seat of my car. I'm first trimester, and horrified at the prospect of toxoplasma, even though I know the risk is low.

This is on the background of my aracuana chicks being stolen by cats from my own back yard. I don't care how lazy you think your cat is - research has shown that even the most placid cat will kill 2-3 animals per night if allowed to roam.

Keep them locked up ffs! If you can't keep them inside, make a run. If you can't do that, keep rabbits instead.

Should've posted this in the litter sub.
Poo on ground is from foxes.cats burry it.

Fionasmammy · 12/10/2020 06:21

Neongenesis what country is that?

NeonGenesis · 12/10/2020 06:22

Fionasmammy - Australia

😱

NeonGenesis · 12/10/2020 06:30

Laws differ by state - some of them allow cats to roam in the daylight hours, but many don't allow it all. They are considered an invasive species by many people here and there is a constant battle over the devastating impact they have had on the wildlife. I haven't lived here for that long so I can't give much more info, but I am learning every day.

I utterly adore cats, and it breaks my heart when I read about people suggesting the use of poisons, but I can't help but think it's the owners being irresponsible which causes these problems. I really don't see why a pet cat NEEDS to roam wild? Just catproof your garden, problem solved. Your cat can play outside and it safe. If you aren't able to do that then maybe you aren't in the best position to rescue a cat?

madcatladyforever · 12/10/2020 06:39

Don't be ridiculous. cats don't break into chicken runs and steal chickens. You need to improve chicken run security in order to prevent foxes doing that which they do on a regular basis as they do have the strength to burrow or break into chicken runs.

shesgonebatshitagain · 12/10/2020 06:43

@SelkieQualia

They aren't clean. They lick their bottoms first, pick up germs, and then lick them all over their coats.
They are clean animals. They dpend hours grooming and cleaning themselves. You never need to bath them unless they’ve got something in their fur from falling in or rolling in something.
difficulttod · 12/10/2020 06:44

How does posting a picture of your cat prove that cats as a species are clean?

Theres a few cats that are always roaming our estate. We've managed to stop most of them pooing on our lawn with the use of chilli, water pistols and cups of water, lemon dettol and hot water poured over the parts of our garden with pebbles, and physically removing the one who keeps running into our house when we open the front door.
Came down the other morning to find a huge splat of runny, rotten poo in the middle of our patio. Absolutely rancid.
I'm all for humane methods of deterrents but if I'd known which cat it was I would have been round the owners house demanding they clean it up. There's no way that should be my responsibility to clean up someone else's pets diarrhoea.

tmh88 · 12/10/2020 06:44

I do get this completely, we have an indoor cat! However next doors cat shits in my garden and leaves dead birds/mice scattered around in it which is so annoying because it’s not even my cat! Poo doesn’t bother me as much but I hate just missing a dead bird when I step outside! Envy

Snowdrop30 · 12/10/2020 06:47

Before we had a cat, our garden became the local litter tray. It was really disgusting and ruined our enjoyment of it (as well as problems with little DC playing). I do love cats, but it used to drive me mad! So when we adopted one, we got an older indoor puss, so we never inflicted that on our neighbours.

SunbathingDragon · 12/10/2020 06:49

Can you really, hand on heart, say that they don't leave the garden? Trackers fitted to cats show that they travel much further than their owners think they do.

Yes, mine never leaves the garden. He’s too old and arthritic to get out. I clean up after him frequently and he has a specially appealing part of the garden to use.

shesgonebatshitagain · 12/10/2020 06:53
@shesgonebatshitagain cat spikes are perfectly legal and cause discomfort and difficulty when said on not injury so anyone who lets their animal roam freely without ensuring their safety is welcome to try to take "action" 😊
It’s not quite so straightforward.
I’ve attached this link which explains that.

keepcatsaway.co.uk/cat-spikes-legal/

I also imagine you have shared fences so anyone who does have a cat - which by Law has rights to roam - they likely won’t agree.

Cars are classed as property under the Criminal Damage Act too.

Screwcorona · 12/10/2020 06:53

Totally agree op. We had this problem but husband started peeing in the garden, in different places around it, at night. This has stopped the problem.

People who think cats burying it ends the problem are mad, who wants to be digging up old cat shit when they do gardening 🙄

Scaraffito · 12/10/2020 07:03

Eurgh cats, YANBU. I would never wish harm on one, but at our old house we used to have so much cat poo in the garden it was gross, especially annoying when you don't have one yourself.

shesgonebatshitagain · 12/10/2020 07:04

@UsernameNotValid

Also, I've already suggested that I'd be securing my garden on here and been told to be prepared to "face action" by cat owners

You actually can't win 🤣

You quite wilfully misinterprets my comment which was not a criticism but adding some useful context to the use of cat spikes. There are a number of conditions to them being classed as legally fitted which many people do not comply with I imagine. I have explained that in my previous reply to you

I also gave a dog. In the ok a dog does not have the right to roam. Cats do. If you don’t like that start done sort of campaign. Plenty of supporters on here by the sounds of it

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 12/10/2020 07:07

Your chicks got killed because you're irresponsible.
The cat didn't undo the cage itself to get a snack.

anniversarywoes · 12/10/2020 07:15

@Rae34

Cats are very clean. Maybe you should keep your 3 year old locked up.
I think it's been proven beyond all doubt that cats are far from clean!

I feel for you op, I never understand why cats are kept as pets. They clearly don't like it! Some of the sanest people I know seem to think their cat loves being around them etc etc but it's blatantly obvious that cats couldn't care less about their owners and just want to be fed!
They destroy the bird population, roam for miles (yes, it's a fact!) and poo wherever they feel like it.

And please don't bother with the, 'my cat poos in the same place, hugs me every time I return from work and never leaves our garden nonsense' That maybe the case but 99% of cats are not like that and their the ones crapping in op's garden!!!

WomenAndVulvas · 12/10/2020 07:20

I really don't get why this is a problem. All sorts of animals poo in gardens. I live in a country with a big pine marten population, they even live in densely populated suburbs. They poo everywhere.
If you can't deal with animal poo, then go and live in a built up city centre. Problem solved.
And if your chickens were killed, they weren't kept in a safe pen. Cats can't open locks or tear down fences.

SelkieQualia · 12/10/2020 07:21

Of course cats steal baby chickens. And as I've already explained, there are no foxes where I live.

Dogs destroy an enormous amount of wildlife and shit everywhere. They are hideously ‘unclean’ eat other animals poo and their own and then lick your faces. They bark, consistently and havee propensity to be extremely aggressive. They have killed and maimed children. They routinely attack grouse/pheasants/sheep/chickens, you name it. In other countries, such as Australia they have caused damage to koala populations etc. They jump your leg and they stink. What’s your point? In comparison, a bit of cat poo on your lawn seems pretty tame.

anniversarywoes · 12/10/2020 07:22

@SelkieQualia

Yep, see, that's the difference between a lot of dog owners and a lot of cat owners. Dog owners are much more likely to happily acknowledge that dogs are utterly gross. Good dog owners don't inflict the grossness on other people ( I suppose good cat owners don't, either.)
Spot on op! I know my dog is literally a 'mucky pup' and I wouldn't inflict her mess on anyone else. During lockdown she managed to squeeze through a gap in the fence and the first thing I did was ask to check our neighbours lawn for poo. I would feel awful knowing my pet had left a revolting mess for someone else to clear up, she's my responsibility, nobody else's. Dogs are such a fantastic pet and one of the many bonuses, is that no cats ever come into our garden. It feels like a luxury having a clean garden that is untouched by cats!!
willloman · 12/10/2020 07:25

I like cats but I'm with you - I wish bells on their neck were mandatory. They are predators who like to kill for sport. And those who object about the poo business, handing out biscuits etc, well you would not like it if a big dog came and dumped all over your lawn/doorstep/house. Quite disgusting really.

Frouby · 12/10/2020 07:27

I agree with you OP and we are big animal people, have a dog, Guinea pigs, chickens, ponies.

Cats are pretty antisocial pets to keep unless you have a housecat. They shit generally on other peoples property. Not many people live near fields or woodland so the cat has to shit somewhere and chances are it's on someone else's property. If I let my dog shit on your front lawn you would be raging. But a cat can?

Best advice is get a keen dog. I've got a cat hating whippet, any cats come on our garden get thoroughly chased off again and it only takes a couple of chases to stop them coming. I did have to warn a neighbour the other year who had 2 friendly, nosey young cats who took to coming in our house that if my dog caught them it would end in a dead cat but he still let them out because 'they like to roam'. Both had been run over within a month 😪.

I’ve never stood in shit left on my lawn by a 3 year old😬
