Keep your filthy disgusting cats at home!

My 3yo son just ran across my front lawn and jumped in the car. On the way, he's trodden in cat poo ( there's a regular offender, and no, it's not fox ). There's now cat poo all across the back seat of my car. I'm first trimester, and horrified at the prospect of toxoplasma, even though I know the risk is low.

This is on the background of my aracuana chicks being stolen by cats from my own back yard. I don't care how lazy you think your cat is - research has shown that even the most placid cat will kill 2-3 animals per night if allowed to roam.

Keep them locked up ffs! If you can't keep them inside, make a run. If you can't do that, keep rabbits instead.

So you wouldn't be disgusted by cat poo ground into your back seat? You wouldn't be annoyed at people failing to take proper care of their pets?

What do you mean by people failing to take proper care of their pets? I take proper care of my pets but cats are allowed to roam.

Kids and animals cause mess. Kids tread in shit. I wouldn’t particularly like cleaning it up, who would? But I wouldn’t start of thread calling cats filthy and disgusting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Furries · 12/10/2020 03:02

@Alongcameacat - well, aren’t you just a peach?! Having that mindset is pretty disgusting.

user127819 · 12/10/2020 03:08

We had cats digging up our plants and pooing all over the place so we got an ultrasound cat deterrent. It worked wonders. We don't have any issues anymore. I do like cats myself but I think owners should attempt to litter train them, whether that be with an indoor litter tray or an outside litter box in the owner's garden, out of fairness to the neighbours.

ShrikeAttack · 12/10/2020 03:10

Goodness. I've had cats all my life. Always chipped and neutered or spayed.

And they only shit in my garden in the tray. They're clean.

I agree with you and cannot stand the cat owners who think their cat should have free reign to shit wherever and whenever, spray all over other people's property or kill other people's animals on the animals own property.

Fancy telling someone that their animal needs to be in a fully cat proof pen to keep them safe but not telling cat owners to keep their cats at home to not bother other people.

Cats are definitely dirty creatures, quite happy to scratch in dirty litter trays then jump up on your bench or table, ick!

Do you know how much allowing them to roam reduces their life expectancy? I think it's very irresponsible.

The best way to scare away cats from your garden is to get a cat yourself. Literally all our neighbours have cats, and before we moved in they all came into our garden. Then we moved in with our small, underweight, old, male, neutered but territorial cat. He's the nicest and cuddliest thing with humans but any cat (even the really big ones) trying to enter our garden gets armageddon unleashed upon them.

Oh and he can't catch birds. He'd like to but he's not fast enough. He does eat moths and chases flies but that doesn't bother me. He stays away from the visiting hedgehog (but he'll let us know that hoggy has come ti visit again).

Cantbreathe2020 · 12/10/2020 03:20

@SelkieQualia

I own a dog. It's very clearly my responsibility to make sure that I pick up her poo, and that she does not roam or bother other people. Why the double standard?
Dogs also lick their balls then their paws! They then walk allllll over your house! They also eat cat poo and then lick their paws, walking it alllll over your house....Hmm
ShrikeAttack · 12/10/2020 03:23

Cats aren't dirty. They're very clean.

@Sweetk0987poiu

Absolutely agree. I have a house cat .. cats lives 17+ years indoors whereas cats who aren’t on average live 2-5 years. They’re not an animal who can survive very long in populated areas yet it seems to be just fine! Weird to me! Annoyingly we have cats constantly shit in our garden! Not even our own 😫😫
2-5 years?! 🤣🤣🤣 Absolute rubbish! I've grown up with cats able to leave the house and explore and every single one has lived to 15+!!!
Cantbreathe2020 · 12/10/2020 03:27

@AToBiba

What is wrong with you

I'm inclined to approve. Anyone who lets a cat outside unchipped - and even worse, unneutered - is a very irresponsible owner and the cat deserves a shot at a better home.

You're "inclined to approve" of poisoning a defenceless animal? HmmHmmHmmHmmBiscuit
pommeartiste · 12/10/2020 03:28

Unless the cat is a stray, being neglected and/or abused, leave it alone. Get some of those humane cat deterrents a PP linked and if you know who owns the cat, ask them about getting their cat a collar with a bell (helps warn birds and rodents), if not, ask around and see if one of your neighbours know. Cats are allowed to roam and that doesn't equal inadequate care. Growing up, we lived on a council estate, didn't have a lot of money, and often saw strays we looked out for. We rescued kittens and loved and cherished them until the day of their death. We couldn't afford microchips, vaccines, and couldn't afford to replace every collar and tag that went missing (and yes, they were neutered) but they were fed, had a warm home and lots of love, more than we believed anyone else could give. Just because you think cats should only be kept inside doesn't mean it's neglect if they're outdoor ones and they should be taken away. That cat probably has a lovely home. There are enough cats in the shelters, some being put down because they can't care for them all. I'm sorry for your chick and getting cat shit all over your backseat (esp with you being pregnant) but to consider capturing a cat that may come from a well-loved home over a bit of poo is sinking a bit too low.

jessstan1 · 12/10/2020 03:31

Don't be so silly. Cats are happiest if they are allowed to roam. It's up to you to keep your chicks safe. Cats usually dig and bury their poo as well but if you are hygienic, cleaning it up is not going to give you toxoplasmosis, just wear disposable gloves. If you're having a baby you'll be doing plenty of handing shit and vomit in the near future.

How dramatic can you get.

SelkieQualia · 12/10/2020 03:32

Yep, see, that's the difference between a lot of dog owners and a lot of cat owners. Dog owners are much more likely to happily acknowledge that dogs are utterly gross. Good dog owners don't inflict the grossness on other people ( I suppose good cat owners don't, either.)

Me too, 18 and 19 years, one just short of 20. They love being out and about.

There are people who have cats and dogs you know and dogs are not utterly gross. However you cannot train a cat in the same way as you can a dog; sit, stay, go in basket, go walkies, etc.

You're still alive, aren't you? I hope you didn't carry on as you have on here in front of your child over such trivia, it hardly sets a good example.

ProfessorSillyStuff · 12/10/2020 03:37

I love cats, had a couple before I developed allergies. However, it's not goady in the least to say that they are filthy disgusting animals. They lick their buttholes, eat rodents, rip open bins and then lick themselves all over. They can harbor many diseases including pneumonic plague, the most deadly and transmissible form of black death.

Furthermore, people who say they prefer animals to humans are just warped. I hear they honestly think its more important to feed stray cats than starving children. It takes a special level of idiocy to harbor hate against every member of your own highly intelligent and diverse species in favor of some dumb animal that barely knows it's born!

So if my dog got into your backyard and ate your Guinea Pig, it would be your fault for not using heavy enough mesh on the cage?

I have 2 kids already, and deal with their poos just fine.

Selkie: So if my dog got into your backyard and ate your Guinea Pig, it would be your fault for not using heavy enough mesh on the cage?

Yes it would. I had a rabbit for a long time and we reinforced his cage when he slept outside because a lot of foxes come in to our garden. We could hardly blame the foxes for wanting to catch our rabbit, it's in their nature. It's also natural for a dog to chase and try to catch a fox. There was a dog two doors down from us who chased a fox through a few back gardens, jumping over fences, and eventually caught and killed it.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/10/2020 03:56

I agree. People who own cats always proclaim that theirs don’t poo anywhere but their own litter tray but they have no idea about that. If you have neighbours with cats you basically get all the worst bits about having a pet without the good stuff.

Plus cat owner’s houses always absolutely stink of cat wee. No idea how it can be right that someone’s pet is allowed to come in to other private property and shit.

Mothership4two · 12/10/2020 04:00

Another rabid MN anti cat post. Basically you just don't like cats.

Cats are known to be clean. You don't have to bath them like dogs. They have lived with humans for thousands of years and are pretty adept at pest control. They are also lovely companions.

I have had cats all my life and have never known anyone step in cat poo EVER. Dog poo yes lots (even hedgehog poo). On my dog walks I see never ending piles of dog poo and the occasional full doggie bag left for the poo fairies to clear up.

Yes a cat may go for a free range chick, but so would a fox (that's what gets the hens around here) or a bird of prey or a corvid and so would a lot of dogs. My cat has three bells on his collar and doesn't catch anything.

That's different. A fox is a wild animal. If it were quolls eating my chicks, I would acknowledge the quolls' right to be there.
