Cant open anything on my desktop except internet ? Any computer wizards out there ?

I can open the internet but anything else on my desk top wont open.
? a problem with microsoft explorer ?
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas that i could try before we lug it off to very expensive computer repair shop ?

In the forums the have a 'techie' board with superb help, you can read without being registered but need to register to post.
