Neck phobia

I have a massive phobia of anyone touching my neck, even talking about it freaks me out. Does anyone else have this or any reason why I'm like this? I don't really understand what's wrong with me

Yes. In my case, I recall an older boy throttling me in the street, when I was about 5 years old. I can't even bear to wear polo-neck jumpers.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/09/2020 03:40

I went to school with a girl who had this phobia. She had no idea why and had no memory of trauma.

poppeeee · 27/09/2020 03:43

I have lashed out at people for no reason, I can't stand hair on my neck

luceloop · 27/09/2020 04:35

@BitOfFun that's aweful

MisiSam · 27/09/2020 04:58

Not the same but similar, I can't bear the thought of anything sticky on my neck, I have to tie my hair up if I'm eating anything sticky because if I feel my hair on my neck it makes me shudder.

luceloop · 01/10/2020 02:20

I hate it

Monty27 · 01/10/2020 02:24

My daughter won't wear anything around her neck since she was a toddler 🤷

luceloop · 01/10/2020 02:26

@Monty27 how old is she now and do you have any clue why it started? Xx

Timepasses · 01/10/2020 02:41

I cannot stand anything near my neck. My mother says she couldn't tie a hat under my chin as a baby as I would get too upset. Weird.

She's 27 now and a stunning young woman. I've absolutely no idea.

Monty27 · 01/10/2020 02:44

She was a planned cesarean baby so it can't have been a birth thing.

luceloop · 01/10/2020 03:00

@Monty27 well she isn't alone. I'm the same and can't make any sense of it, it seems so irrational but I hate people even looking at my neck

BeanieB2020 · 01/10/2020 04:06

Yup. An ex grabbed me by the neck (hence ex) when I was a teenager and ever since I can't stand anyone touching my neck even if it's done in a gentle way with good intentions. Sucks.

Monty27 · 01/10/2020 04:21

luceloop suppose it's a vulnerable part of the body. I'm cringing at the thought of it now.

Catgotyourbrain · 01/10/2020 08:23

I'm like this and so is my mum.
I have a child with ADH and autism in the family (if I'm honest myself and my mum have traits at the very least)

Hypersensitivity (oversensitive to touch) and hyposensitivity (needing strong sensations of touch like a heavy blanket or tight clothes) are both part and parcel of non neurotypical people - and once you ask you find lots of 'neurotypical' also have these. What I didn't understand for a loooong time is you can have both simultaneously - can't have anyone touch my neck or bottom of feet lightly - but foot massage is ok weirdly. I don't even like having people stand behind me and for ages I thought that I was a weirdo.

Look up 'proprioception' - the sensation of the presence of your own body (like when you close your eyes you know where your feet are - but some people need a heavy blanket pressuring their feet to 'know' where they are)

OytheBumbler · 01/10/2020 08:26

I have this. I always thought I must've been hanged as a witch in a previous life because it's so irrational.

luceloop · 02/10/2020 13:24

@Catgotyourbrain it's not everywhere though I don't mind being touched anywhere but my neck, though a more firmer grasp is better than a light touch I suppose I hadn't thought about that before
