strangest food item (or drink) that you buy a lot of

sounds odd but the other day i sat down and worked out that we buy about 4 or 6 bottles of squash. that sounds odd enough but there is only me and my partner no children living here or visiting.
i only like orange mixed not plain orange sugar free of course. we rarely have hot drinks tend to have them if we go out to a cafe for a treat.
anyway i was thinking we must get through an awful lot and i just wondered what is the thing you buy most of every week an unusual item

OP posts:

Family of four. We get through at least 2kg of carrots in a normal week. It's the one item that we will go to another shop if we can't get it in the regular shop.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 15:22

I always have at least 5 types of cheese in my fridge, and I live alone.
I eat a lot of cheese!

LunaNorth · 23/08/2020 15:24

Tomatoes. Fresh and tinned. I eat cherry tomatoes like sweets.

Jamhandprints · 23/08/2020 15:27

We buy a lot of garlic bread! It's one thing my son will always eat (the middle anyway).

Btw OP, squash with sugar is so much healthier than sugar free. The sweeteners they use are so bad for you, especially if you have it a lot.

Ginfordinner · 23/08/2020 15:39

But none of the aforementioned food or drink items could be considered strange.

We eat a lot of cheese, I get through a lot of tinned and fresh tomatoes, but those are normal everyday items for most people.

I can't think of anything that I buy that is strange, but maybe not your usual run of the mill grocery items. DD is vegetarian who doesn't consume much dairy so I buy Oatly, Richmond meat free sausages, Linda McCartney veggie meat substitutes, king oyster mushrooms and a lot of cashew nuts for making cashew cream.

Oldbagface · 23/08/2020 16:01

Richmond meat free are lovely. We buy them weekly. Not really strange though.

We use a lot of beans and lentils. Only one DC is vegan but we try and cut down on meat. Still not strange.

The strangest thing I've been served at someone's house was tinned burgers vom.

Juanmorebeer · 23/08/2020 16:30

I get through a lot of mini gherkins. But they have to be a particular brand the mini ones in the black jar cos all others taste far too much of dill which is yuck. These ones are just right

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 17:07

I buy rollmops, and tongue, are they strange?
I don't know anyone else irl who likes either.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 17:09

@Juanmorebeer
What is the brand?
I adore anything pickled, my absolute favourites are Mrs Elswood Haimisha cucumbers, they are really salty and delicious.

AdaColeman · 23/08/2020 17:14

I love rollmops. I drain them a little and stir with sour cream or greek yoghurt and pile onto rye bread, or serve them with a Russian style potato and vegetable salad.

Anordinarymum · 23/08/2020 17:19

How nice it must be for you to go to the fridge and know The Cheese is there exactly as you left it minus bite marks, and fully wrapped.

Tries to stem feelings of immense jealousy

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 17:22

@AdaColeman, I do the same with the yoghurt, always have plain greek yoghurt in too, and add horseradish.
Serve with beetroot.

AdaColeman · 23/08/2020 17:26

Oh yes Brillo, delicious with beetroot salad! Wine

Ginfordinner · 23/08/2020 17:27

I love rollmops @IHaveBrilloHair.

relievedlady · 23/08/2020 17:29

We but 10 packs of thin bagels every time we go shopping as we get through a pack of 6 a day Grin

EasilyDelighted · 23/08/2020 17:32

I love rollmops too, buy them quite regularly.

We buy lots of frozen fruit, at least three bags a week, autistic DS doesn't like "warm" fruit. He also freezes normal fruit to eat straight from the freezer, banana slices, blackberries and raspberries when we have picked them.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/08/2020 17:33

Yey, Im not alone with my rollmop love!
I actually love anything with strong flavours so pickled/smoked food, stinky cheese, mustards, horseradish, wasabi etc.
I rarely bother with anything sweet though, I don't hate sweet food but its just not my thing, though there's the odd exception on occasion.

Same here! I currently have 7 in my fridge! I love cheese. Other people have a sweet tooth and I have a cheese tooth or a meat tooth. :)
EasilyDelighted · 23/08/2020 17:35

Yes, DS and I love all the strong, tangy, savoury stuff too.

JingsMahBucket · 23/08/2020 17:39

@Ginfordinner to your point about what people consider “strange”, I currently have both duck breast prosciutto and smoked duck breast in my fridge. I’ve been slicing the prosciutto and eating it straight as a snack with cheese, apples and crackers. The last fatty bit will likely get sautéed with some greens for flavour. After sampling a few slices of the smoked duck breast meat, I’ll likely use that as a meat topping / accompaniment for fresh salads.

bushtailadventures · 23/08/2020 17:39

Not really a food I suppose, but UHT milk. I buy 15 litres a week to make yoghurt (there are 5 adults in the house) Usually easy to buy but then they put restrictions on because of panic buying and it was a difficult thing to find for a while.

Tana433 · 23/08/2020 17:43

Walker Sensation Thai Sweet Chilli crisps. I eat a bag every single day and very little else apart from peanut butter on toast. Not strange maybe but probably unusual to practically live off these items like i do.

Spied · 23/08/2020 17:45

Bananas

AriesTheRam · 23/08/2020 17:49

Sparkling water. We get through around 12 litres a week

Inextremis · 23/08/2020 17:49

My 'must haves' that might be slightly odd are lemon yoghurt (have to have at least one a day), Patak's chili pickle (goes on lots of things), and several types of rice - each one with a different purpose, so I always have long grain, Basmati, risotto (2 types at the moment), paella, and pudding. Fresh coriander has to be in the kitchen at all times, too. I'm currently addicted to Serrano ham with red or black grapes - so I make sure we never run out of those, either.
