Clothing size not adding up, can’t be only one!

Hello, I want to start off saying I’m fairly short, 5ft2 and weigh 135lbs. I am working on losing weight and aim to be a fit 120lbs within 6 months. When I use Websites size guides I always come out at about a size 16 (42/29/41) BUT I wear size 10-12, 14 is too big, so what gives? Am I bizarre? Are all size guides complete bullshit?

I need to buy clothes online and at the moment even if I went to a shop you can’t try anything on anyway and I am a mother of 2 who can only get to a shop via public transport and I don’t really want to take my very young children on a train or bus at the moment let alone into a shop! It just means that I keep buying things Offline that don’t fit and I don’t know what would suit me. It’s just really frustrating!

Just order at 10/12 if that's what fits I would say I'm an 18 at the moment but I wear size 14 it's vanity sizing was the same weight 10 years ago and I was wearing size 20 .

I find that designer brands are exactly the size they’re meant to be and I size up if I’m between sizes. High street stuff can be a bit inconsistent and sizing is often vanity so I also need 1-2 sizes smaller than my measurements would suggest.

If ordering online, it’s probably easiest to stick to your favourite brands and just remember what size to get from them.

Sizing is just mad, I bought some shorts from one shop in size 12 and they fitted perfectly, in another shop I couldn't even get a size 14 over my hips, and I wear size 10 jeans 😁

I buy online most the time and order 2 sizes to try out, and return one.

There's actually a BSI clothing standard, and the online companies seem to claim they use these sizes, when in reality their clothes fit like high street vanity sizing. I usually end up buying the size they say first time I use a company, then compare to my own clothes and end up going down 2 sizes.

Wish online companies would make clothing to their advertised sizes, or tell you the fit so you know this garment is designed for large breasts and narrow hips, and that is designed for someone with a broad waist, etc. It's no good when they pin the clothes to fit the model and then the garment has a totally different fit to what you expect.

Hmm. My measurements are 36, 27, 37. I'm 5ft 7 and weigh 132lb. I wear a size 10 pretty consistently, although some are smaller than others. I've got size10s from nearly 20 years ago, that I can fit into but they are snugger. They are a European size 36 whereas my current ones are a European size 38.

It's weird, I've got an old household manual from 1975 where they say a size 10 is 32, 24, 34!Shock Someone my measurements would be a size between a 12 and 14 then. I used to wear a 12 in the 80s and 90s at a similar weight.

I think it also depends on style. Tops are often not cut skin tight so you can get away with a size smaller on the bust. Peg leg trousers often have more room on the hips and thighs for example than a straight slim leg denim pair of jeans.

@veryvery yeh it’s just weird, I wear size 10 skinny jeans with no issues apart from some minor gaping at the waist, it’s just bizarre that in reality I shouldn’t fit in them!

I just wish we could go try some clothes on, I like having a go at different styles and sizes but don’t have the budget to buy a range of sizes online or the time to take them back to the post office to return!
