Do you think there's room on here for diametrically opposing opinions?

When I first joined (oh yes indeedy, those halcyon days) there seemed to be a wider spread of opinions. And a greater respect for others.

Now it feels sometimes that there is an area of thinking that is deemed ok (in terms of parenting or social or political view), and it gets more and more narrowly defined as posters reinforce each other's views. Then there are extreme personalities who are seen as trolls for disagreeing with this established 'range of normality'. And possibly there are a lot of voices who just don't bother to comment because of the strength of the agreeing posters.

There have been times when someone will post a dissenting opinion and all of a sudden a huge group emerges from gawd-knows where seemingly relieved that their own sense of 'normality' is being raised.

I wonder whether respect for others is diminishing. I am certainly probably guilty of this, of posting an opposing position because the status quo seems to have swung too far away from my sense of 'normality' and 'correctness'. I'm certain I had more respect in the early days.

Of course it might just be me, I might be making no sense, or I may just be in a twonkish mood .. but anyhoo .. shall I post this?

Yes thinking about it again, and thinking back a way to one of the first scraps I got involved with (remember the Lizzy Bardsley/Wife Swap one? oh 4 years ago now) maybe its just some issues spark off time and time again...the usual suspects. If some issue has a class/money undertone, you've had it.

I think they're all suffering from childbirth memory syndrome.

I never felt that the old argie-bargies were mean at any stage though .. although possibly because I was always on the right side of truth and justice of course

I never felt that the old argie-bargies were mean at any stage though and there were always different trains of thought on them ...

of course that perception might be that because I was always on the right side of truth and justice of course

does "bottle feeding is child abuse" ring any bells? there were also some outrageous comments on vaccination - along the lines of vaccination is child abuse, and also that non vaccination is like pooing on all of your neighbours or something. can't rmeeber clearly, have wiped it from my mind.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/09/2007 20:28

hehe. but we get a great insight into how you construct your posts.

I always stood behind JimJams on the vaccination threads .. found it the safest and most intersting place to be

I would say MN is a good place to have discussions as it is not RL and you can turn off.

Tamum · 26/09/2007 20:34

Err, can I refer you to the old circumcision threads if you feel there was no nastiness in the old days? I agree that there's more mindless bickering now but there was sure as hell a fair few nasty spats a long time ago.

gess · 26/09/2007 20:38

oooh the vaccination is child abuse was a one off- even I disagreed with that particular poster (probably the one time I've found myself arguing for mass vaccination)

Circumcision threads -

NotAnOtter · 26/09/2007 20:39

twig - i felt exactly what you describe on a CV thread last night

Twiglett · 26/09/2007 20:40

sniggers at the thought of a thread I once posted along the lines of I put salt in my potatoes and DS is circumcised .. yahbooo suck to the lot of ya

I agree but I also get really fed up with people spouting the 'i'm perfect and never judge' card when blatantly giving the op a hard time for making some kind of innocent judgement. I think people are too quick to jump to conclusions about the intentions of the op. Probably says more about what's happening in their heads.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/09/2007 20:41

blimey a cv thread? that is extreme.

SenoraPostrophe · 26/09/2007 20:42

was it a brown envelope / white envelope clash?

Twiglett · 26/09/2007 20:43

guffaws at SenoraP who has missed much mind-blowingly obsessive posting

GodzillasBumcheek · 26/09/2007 20:55
