Aaargh!!
My dad is currently staying at my sister's flat while she's away and has discovered taht she has rats - or at least one rat who ate his pear last night and left large droppings....She lives alone and is back on Tuesday and I know will not want to stay there if nothing has been done. Has anyone else had this problem. Do you call Rentokill or the council and does it work??? My poor dad is sleeping on the floor!

All advice welcome

Most district councils (I work for one) should treat the rats free of charge. Phone on Monday and they should be out fairly soon.

Carriel,
Where we last lived we had a problem with rats in our back yard. We phoned the council who came and set a trap. The rats soon disappeared and the service was free. I'm not too sure if this applies to indoor infestations, but you don't lose anything by phoning the council to find out. Hope you get rid.

Oh drat, or should that be oh rats! My two boys want to keep rats as pets - I was hoping this would be all about pets.

The Environmental Health dept of your local council is obliged to sort out rat problems as it is a public health issue. They normally come out same or next day.

madonna I have not had so much fun on a Sunday night in a long time as I have reading your posts tonight.
Keep them coming, you are obviously on a roll

or should that be "on a Troll..."?

My brother had mice as pets as a kid and they got loose and infested our house. It took ages to get rid of them.
So why is your dad sleeping on the floor? And why didn't your sister notice the rats? Madonna I think you should see what gf has to say about rats as pets.

Yes, the council came out FOC and ours went pretty quickly. R

Madonna. I have three boy pet rats and before them I had two girl rats. I find that they make lovely pets. I used to have a hamster when I was little and the dam thing used to bite for fun. I can honestly say that I have not been bitten once in the three years that we have had rats as pets. The biggest trouble that we had was in actually finding a breader to buy them from, wouldn't get them from a pet shop as you need to know that they have been handled frequently so that they are nice and friendly. I advise you only to get them if you have lots of free time to spend with them as they are very sociable animals and love to be out and about. I love mine to bits, but have to say that if I saw a wild one I would run a mile!
