Things I wish I'd known

Hi All,

There are so many things I wish I'd known before my dd was born. Now she's almost 6 months and I think there are plenty more things I should get to know from the experts (other mums). I'm about to start weaning, any tips. Or things I need to watch out for when she starts crawling.

Cheers

Ok, I'll start -

I wish I'd know baby food doesn't come off matt wall paint, would have painted the dining room with satin.

There are soooo many things I could add here. I'll give one or two to start.... I painted the entire downstairs of my house in bathroom paint ! That way, I can wash all of the walls ! Another one, grobags are quite expensive, and once you hit 6 months, quite often your lo will fall between sizes - go to Primark ! They sell sleep suits, which are basically like a baby gro, in a fleece material for £3 - and they are brilliant.
Last one for now, when you start weening - don't limit the lo to the stuff you like. I used to just get a mixed veg box thing, and puree'd a load of random stuff together. As a result, my ds will eat absolutely anything I give to him (except aubergine some reason ! Can't blame him it's horrid !!!)

Have to agree aubergine is quite nasty

Good tip on the grobags, was dreading her growing out of the ones she's in now.

not to sweat the small asutff, sleeping/feeding routines etc.

I wish I'd known that leaving herself to cry for 20 minutes didn't make me the worst mother in the world.

A new found confidence comes with your second child, I'd wish I'd had that with my first.

I wish I'd known about mumsnet when I had my dd.!

How quickly it goes. Everyone says it but I didn't believe it. I do now.

Sushipaws · 17/09/2007 20:42

Ha, Pruners, my sister in law is pregnant now and fully believes her baby will feed every 4 hours, she's got her daily rota all planned out. I've tried to tell her but she's read it in her baby bible by 'she who must not be named'.

I remembered a few others....Once they get passed that 'baby' stage, and become more of a person i.e. 8 - 12 months I guess....

  • They will have a temper tantrum in the supermarket; non parents will look at you in a way that says "Control your child you bad parent", other parents will look at you in a way that says "you poor bugger, we've all been there"
  • They can fall over flat on their face and laugh, but take something off them you don't want them to have, and they will scream like a banshee !
  • Only paint your house in bathroom paint from now on - it means you can wash the walls after they throw their food at it
  • Banana turns all clothes a stinking brown colour
  • Just because they like something this week, it doesn't mean that they will like it next week
  • Just when you think you have a routine in place, they change it !
  • Start brushing their teeth early. Loads and loads of people on here have problems with their lo's brushing their teeth - so I decided to start really early. As a result, after bath time my ds looks for his toothbrush ! (Thanks mn for making me think og this one in advance !)
  • If you have a hangover, they will wake up an hour earlier than usual !
