I am planning my daughter's 6th birthday party and fancied a few new games to make a change so all ideas gratefully received. Oh and there will be 20 kids!!

Have you ever played sharks?

Get a load of hats in.....doesnt matter what they are and could be woolly or Granny's old hats ..... the funnier the better.

Sit the children down on the floor and give everyone a hat. Play the music and everyone must have a hat on their head. As the music starts each child removes the hat from the person in front and puts it on their own head. (At some point remove a hat from the game) When the music stops the one without a hat loses and sits out!

Have a bag of sweets ready in case of tears!!

Perhaps I should explain...

Each child has a piece of newspaper (suggest half or quarter page broadsheet). They dance round the paper (rocks) until the music stops. They then have to get on a rock or the shark (you) will get them. Remove pieces of newspaper as the game progresses. For extra fun, let them squeeze more than one person onto a "rock" , or tear a piece in half with the shout "tide's coming in". Great fun.

www.amazingmoms.com is very American (sorry to any Americans!) but have got loads of party ideas from here in the past.

I played a game called the chocolate game when i was a kid but can't remember how it worked, something to do with eating it with a knife and fork?

A group of children have a die. The first person to throw a six has to get dressed in some dressing-up stuff, and then start chomping on a bar of chocolate with a knife and fork. Meanwhile, the other children are taking it in turns to try to get a six. If this happens, the first child has to undress, and the second has to put the stuff on and eat the chocolate. There is no point to it really, other than to eat as much chocolate as possible, and to have a laugh.

Phew well we survived! Never has two hours gone so slowly though - we had a little cliquey gang of girls who announced at the first game that "we don't really llike playing games" aaaaaaaagh!!! How I didn't tell them to go home was a miracle - I just used the power of confectionary! we started the game with them watching and soon it became apparent to them that their mates were eating sweets, they soon joined in! Thanks for all the tips

pointydog · 29/08/2006 20:06

Well, if emmagee comes back with a list rundown after 2 years, she's more of a mum than I'll ever be.

AnelaSunshine · 29/08/2006 20:09

LOL, c'mon EmmaGee - here's your chance to grasp the MN mothering crown

bubble99 · 29/08/2006 20:11

Round this way, and from what I can see, the children play........'Guess how much mummy/daddy spent on the party bags'

Saturn74 · 29/08/2006 20:15

I might have been tempted to instigate a 3 hour game of 'Sleeping Lions'! I hope you all had a lovely party.

pointydog · 29/08/2006 20:16

Bubble, I love that game. Motivates me to go out and buy the biggest (or smallest) lot of shiny crap. Kids love that rubbish, parents should acccept it.

Tommy · 29/08/2006 20:19

oh dear bubble - hope they don't play that game round here. Have DS2's party tomorrow and even DS1 at the grand old age of 4 thinks the party bags are a bit paltry

Can't be doing with the compettion thing.....
