Alpha Course - what is it?

Recently I've noticed banners in front of churches all over London advertising the Alpha Course. It seems that every church with a banner offers the course. What is it? Anyone done it?

someone put an alpha course leaflet through my door at 10.30 last night, thought i was being burgled! i've never done it but think its just a discussion group, talks about stuff like who is jesus, how to pray etc. its supposed to be for people wanting to investigate christianity or new christians.

wobblyknicks · 04/10/2004 21:44

It's an 'introductory' course into Christianity - explains the basics, answers questions you might have about Christianity etc. Also supposed to be a good way of meeting other Christians or like-minded people and 'communing'.

beansmum · 04/10/2004 21:47

just dug the leaflet out of the bin. apparently it's a relaxed, non threatening, low key, friendly and fun opportunity to explore the christian faith. it's supported by all the main christian denominations. and you get a free meal.

NomDePlume · 04/10/2004 21:52

Sorry, but ROFL @ 'you get a free meal' !

beansmum · 04/10/2004 21:54

i'm quite tempted to go actually, had a baked potato for dinner tonight for the 3rd time in 4 days

GeorginaA · 04/10/2004 21:56

Random driveby factlet: I used to (don't know if I still do) have the Alpha Course cookbook - the food was actually pretty good out of there...

NomDePlume · 04/10/2004 21:56

Lol, how did you get hold of that ?!

Earlybird · 04/10/2004 21:57

We always used to go to the Hare Krishna temple in SoHo for a free meal when I was a kid. It was great - really good vegetarian curries.

GeorginaA · 04/10/2004 22:02

In my former life I was a fairly fundamentalist evangelical christian ... scurries away back under her rock

(Hmm... that should make me flame bait from multiple sides, shouldn't it really?)

I should point out that it wasn't a "compulsory" cookbook. Just a suggested recipes thing for hosts who weren't used to cooking in bulk.

It's quite good fun and they feed you as well.
My sister runs an alpha course south of London

Ameriscot2004 · 05/10/2004 07:06

The Alpha Course is great fun. It's an opportunity for non-Christians to learn more about the Christian faith with a series of themed talks. The evening starts with a meal, where no one talks about the church or Christianity, then comes the talk. After that, it's coffee and into small groups (groups of about 8 - 12) for discussion arising from the talk.

We are starting our next Alpha course tomorrow, and we are expecting over well 100 people for supper. Muggins here is going to spending the next two days cooking for it!

muddaofsuburbia · 05/10/2004 08:47

I've led Youth Alpha courses before - no nice meals - just Pringles and doughnuts

Ameriscot2004 · 05/10/2004 08:55

We have pizza (lots of it) at our Youth Alpha. They don't seem to get bored by the same food each week.

teadrinker · 05/10/2004 09:11

I've been on an Alpha course. Was a good way to meet and discuss the basics.

Nicky Gumble (the guy on the video shown at the Alpha course) creeps me out for some reason but other than that it was a good experience and led to setting up fellowship groups.

Yes, I'm a Christian but not the BB kind

lilibet · 05/10/2004 09:15

Teadrinker, what's a BB kind??

teadrinker · 05/10/2004 09:19

Bible Bashing - sorry for using abbrev.

There's so much negativity around religion I feel I almost have to apologise sometimes.

muddaofsuburbia · 05/10/2004 09:40

What is a bible basher anyway?

teadrinker · 05/10/2004 09:45

Sort of person who has an answer for everything by quoting The Bible. You know the sort.
